Hi...

Ive read this thread with much interest.

Just had an RNS 510 (I think its a B version) fitted into my Golf GTD 140 DSG, '06, but an '07 model.

All works well except the battery drain issue.  I remove a fuse to stop this.

Does anyone know if changing the firmware will cure the problem ?

If it does, which version of firmware I should install ?

Ive read conflicting posts on other sites/threads as to which firmware version fixes battery drain on B version RNS 510's.

Id rather not have to spend cash on a CAN bus gateway.

All advice/links welcome :)

TIA,

Mark.

Depends on which version of the firmware is installed.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

If you have the secret menu activated, you can do it through this - press and hold setup and it should cycle to the test menu. If not, you need someone with vcds to activate it.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

The problem is Carlos is that there's no prompt, status bar or inkling that it's up to much hence why I'm in this loop where I can't trigger the map install

I'll try the OEM maps disc this lunch but how best can I trigger it, via setup, via the maps button, or nav button? Being a rookie, I'm not sure on the best way to go about it so by following the on screen German prompts I'm not getting the feedback I need. It wears thin after a while using the tranzilla translator app on my HTC for every prompt

Cheers.

What should happen is you put the disc in, you get a prompt saying that navigation has to be stopped, press ok for that, then after a while (can be up to 5 mins) you get a prompt asking if you want to run from the disc or save to HDD, save the map data, from that point on it can take 45-50mins for the install.

Once it has gone past that point when you then press eject you will get the info on screen including the progress bar.

^ Okay. Hmm, certainly not doing that for me.

I even did a video this time so I can show you guys what the process is while I'm sat in front of it so hopefully with the video interaction, you can point me in the right direction or advise what to do/what not to do. It's quite a boring video (only 10 mins long  :laugh: ) but this is where I'm at, as said the stupid German language doesn't help me;

The DVD player reads movie DVDs (Region2), reads firmware DVDs and plays music CD's. It just errors with my OEM 5.0 Maps DVD (VW labelled, came with the RNS), my copied 6.0 Maps DVD and copied 6.1 maps DVD.

Can I install the maps from a USB stick/drive or SD card, or, an alternate method?

Thanks again.
Pete

Pete,

You can't install the maps from USB or SD Card.

You may be having difficulties as it is on Media and it might be thinking it's a CD your trying to play. Although it should recognise it's a Map Disc and auto switch.

Try pressing Map first and then putting the disc in and see what happens.

I usually start the unit up leaving it on radio and once all started up put the disc in and it goes from there.

I still think its the DVD drive,  it might read cd/dvd's but the map disc is laden with data information and if the laser is damaged in anyway it will not read the map disc.

:signLOL: I've tried it from every screen fella, believe you and me. I've clocked up about 15 hours now sat in the drivers seat :stupid:
I know in the vid its from the media screen, but surely it should spool the maps install from any screen? - Anyway none the less I've tried from all screens. Setup, Map and Nav were of the first that I tried.

Fair enough if it can only be invoked from DVD. I realise that was an optimistic question  :sad1:

I'm really not sure how to progress chaps - any ideas if it was you? I'll try the load via maps & nav screens and vid that so you can see the response.

Think I've tried radio but will again just for piece of mind.

You and Carl may be right. If it is, can I replace just the DVD drive? It doesn't look like it comes out alone although saying that, I know you said earlier in the thread you've tried replacement drives before  :happy2:

Cheers.
Pete

You can replace the drive. Although if you not very Tech savvy i would get someone like Darren who knows what he is doing to do it for you.

It's "similar" to replacing a drive on a PC just a little more involved :happy2:

There is 2 screw on the top and then once the top is off there is 2 more screws holding the drive in at the back...then its just a ribbon cable pull the drive out and install new one in reverse order.

Never actually changed one for a problem although my mate has due to the drive not reading original discs?  I have stripped many down to fix other problems.

^^^ Sounds easy enough Daz. I'm a Service Desk Engineer by trade, so the hardware side of it shouldn't be too much of an issue

Tried a V7 maps disc today - exactly the same result. This one was read for a lot longer though and I could hear the DVD drive going mad and squizzing around. With the other discs I'd tried, it was distinctly quieter but takes around the same amount of time to error and eject them.

I'm at the conclusion now that it is the drive - how do I go about replacing it fella, bag one off ebay?

Thanks.
Pete

I've tootled around for long enough now without the maps & nav working and I think I can safely conclude it's the DVD Drive that's faulting in some capacity. I tried a CD/DVD laser cleaning disc as a desperate last ditch attempt to take a step forwards, but needless to say I found it had 0 effect.

I think if I replace the DVD drive I'll be okay.
Would all knowledgeable parties agree?  :happy2:

Once I've got it all functioning nicely I'm not attempting any updates or upgrades of any kind again  :scared:  :chicken:

Thanks.
Pete

I don't think you have any other avenues to try now mate.

I'd defo try changing the drive.

Well, had two cracks at changing the drive.

On both occasions I've stripped the dash down, got to the RNS, taken it out then realised I don't have the correct Torx screw head for the security screws on the top

I think they're a T6 or T8 after picking Carls brains. Just thought I'd punch in an update as I'm hopefully on the home stretch now with this one. If it's not the DVD drive, I'll just have to save for another one  :stupid:
