its possible the firmware didn't take in the first place, and just took its time to show i.e when you put the map disc in...

Just go through what carl has said with the 1300 and you should be fine.

^ Hmm, I see. Cheers Daz.

Right, well I ended up putting 2720 back on tbh as it wouldn't upgrade the 1300 firmware DVD and just kept looping in the boot spool.

2720 is back on but all in German for some reason? Can I change the language?  :ashamed:
When clicking the maps button, it still keeps demanding the Navigation CD, to which I enter it. 10 seconds later it ejects it asking for the Navigation DVD. I sat there and tried about 12 attempts before I realised it wouldn't have it. This was the OEM VW Western Europe 5.0 Maps DVD i was trying with.

I know I can't hit the 6.1 maps or I'll reproduce the problems before. I held the setup button on start up but it just took me to the Radio frequency screen, FM and AM as options. Can I work around this?

Thanks.
Pete

Setup- Sprache should get you to the language menu.

Wish I could help with the rest  :sad1:

Thing is though with out the map disc you cannot change the language :sad1: I'm just wondering if you have a poorly dvd drive and its not reading the discs properly?

I do have a spare DVD drive you can have if you fancy swapping it out?  it is very easy to do,

^^^^^ That was my next suggestion.

However as you can not get to the test menu something is wrong somewhere as that firmware has the Test menu already enabled.

Do you have access to VCDS?

Thanks, that did the trick but did also demand the Maps DVD as Daz mentions.

...As I just found out  Well, as of 2 weeks ago it played a PAL UK Shrek 2 DVD happily, so unless problems have developed as of Mid October it's proven and tested?
What's involved to swap fella?

^^^^^ That was my next suggestion.

How should the test menu be invoked again?
I've got VDCS 10.6, Rosstech lead and laptop waiting to pounce  :happy2: ...

I'm at a stage now where all I require is the maps to be installed, then, in theory bobs your uncle. Can I enable the allow downgrade attribute via VCDS did one of you mention before chaps?

Ta!
Pete

Yes

You need to enable the test menu in VCDS as follows

1. Go to Control Module Navigation - 37
2. Click on Adaptation - 10
3. Type 50 into the channel box.
4. Change the value from 0 to 1
5. Click on test and then press code
6. Exit out of VCDS.
7. Press <> and I to reboot the RNS 510.
8. Then press setup for about 20 to 30 seconds to enable the secret menu (just keep your finger on it it will go from normal menu to radio then after about 10-15 secs to the hidden menu)

Once in the test menu iirc its the very last sub menu that has an option to allow firmware downgrade :happy2:

Yup. Worked a treat, cheers.

Problem now is that on demanding the maps, I inserted a DVD that I thought had the 6.1 maps on (it was the only DVD it read at point on demanding the maps - does that sound right if it is a FW DVD instead of the 6.1 maps?). That might explain the 2x downgrade errors now, that bit is totally my fault as it's not a labelled disc of any kind. It's one I stole of Jay in fact. I've PM'ed him to check what exactly was on it...

So now, I'm back at the VW splash welcome screen but with the red banner at the top and bottom, looking nasty.
How can I progress past this point back to use the RNS? This is my main stumbling block, not knowing the quick recoveries.

Each time I restart with <, > and i it doesn't power back up. When I turn it on, same horrible splash screen. I'm about ready to put a screw driver through its screen atm, little barsteward  :fighting:

I know I can workaround this by reinstalling the 2720 firmware, but thats 50 minutes gone instantly. I'm sat in the car now, what should I hit (or smash  ) to bring it back to where I was moments before I tried the suspected wrong DVD? That might explain quite a bit actually. The only thing is, it still doesn't read my two different map DVDs, one genuine and one burnt via Nero.

Thanks again  :happy2:
Pete

I know its no help now but easy way to tell the maps from the f/w disc is the amount of data burnt on the disc, the f/w data in terms of the amount it burns on the disc is roughly 1/2 inch, the maps takes most of the disc.

There is a fix disc to boot the unit back into life, its over on vwnavi.com unless carl has a quick link??

^^^^^ I've spoken to Pete via PM to try a couple of things first. The SWL Recovery was going to be a last resort along with a HDD Format.

Anyway this is a link for the the SWL Recovery Disc - SWL Recovery

Burn to disc the same way as firmware and then press Setup, Mic & Eject to force a firmware upgrade and just run it the same as a firmware disc.

2720 is back on now  :happy2: All but the nav/maps/traffic therefore works now, plus its in German but that's not the end of the world

Right, so DVD plays proper DVD discs at least as Mr Dreamworks knows the score;

This is what happens when I put the Maps DVD in (genuine or copied);

If I let it re-suck it in, so to speak, and leave it, it reproduce the error but doesn't re-eject the DVD. The screen doesn't change and I can't hear it being read (unless it's doing it very very quietly) + nothing changes or progresses.

So the now only remaining question and problem is how can I put these damn maps on?  As long as it's 5.0 or later, I don't mind whatsoever  :happy2:

Cheers again for the input.
Pete

I can give you a link to a Disc that will erase the map partition only. You could try that and see if it allows the install after that

^ Thanks Carl.

The maps format disc ran okay but produced an error on restart, the usual downgrade error that I've had twice previously.
Restarted and sat inserting the maps 6.1 DVD several times as ever and on one occasion, actually got progress. The maps in the background (behind the insert maps DVD prompt) actually appeared, in Regensburg would you believe it

It took an absolute age (about 30 minutes) but progressed no further. The DVD player was clicking in a pattern, but didn't sound like any proper reading was being done so I whipped it out to try and make progress and put it back in. Back in the same loop... Haven't tried the OEM maps DVD yet.

Half the battle is that everything is in German so I can't even make English sense of the prompts and errors  :ashamed:
Should I be aiming to try a 6.0 maps DVD - something different at least?

The map install disc will take around 45-50 minutes to install.

When you press eject you should be asked if you want to continue or be notified when the install is complete. There should also be a progress bar.

There would be no benefit really in trying a 6.0 disc as the mapping is the same it's just 6.1 has some bug fixes in it.

I would try the OEM disc first and then go from there.

The problem is Carlos is that there's no prompt, status bar or inkling that it's up to much hence why I'm in this loop where I can't trigger the map install

I'll try the OEM maps disc this lunch but how best can I trigger it, via setup, via the maps button, or nav button? Being a rookie, I'm not sure on the best way to go about it so by following the on screen German prompts I'm not getting the feedback I need. It wears thin after a while using the tranzilla translator app on my HTC for every prompt

Cheers.
Pete
