Just another thing that's come to mind, VCDS can normally tell you if there is a fault with the drive and IIRC you can test the drive too.

^ I didn't realise that fella, but tbh, it's all it can be I suppose now so that may just confirm what we already suspect?

Just had another go as a friend dropped round T6 and T8 socket heads. You wouldn't believe it, but the T6 is too small with no grip in the screw head and the T8 is too big. Wonderful
I also dropped a Torx screw into the quick clear screen 'gap' and couldn't reach it after about an hour trying to retrieve it  :fighting: :fighting: :fighting: FFS.

Light was the issue after 5pm ish' anyway.

Assuming it's a T7 torx socket head I need from the trial and error applied, should that also not fit, where do I turn next?
There's some T screws down the side of the RNS510 that are T8 as the T8 screw socket fit nicely, but it's not the side I want to expose (at least I don't think it is, I'm guessing the whole process though here?).

Cheers
Pete

Phew, glad that's all over  :drinking:

So it turned out to be the DVD drive as some suspected, at least, in that the DVD drive Darren very kindly sent my way, my genuine Version 5 VW maps disc ran in that and re-installed the maps + Nav software and let me change the language from German to English. So it's fixed and I'm all singing and dancing again, just on old maps. TBH, I'll take that  :happy2:

I'm such a pro at taking the dash out now with bubble wrap over the climate controls and RNS screen, I may get a part time job at VW on weekends

So in conclusion, my DVD drive was faulty in not reading the genuine VW discs OR copied discs (all of them  :sad1:) and my copied discs (all of them it would seem) are all either scratched beyond use, or unreadable for different reasons on good and working drives. We're talking four different DVD discs here, mostly Tesco (or similar brand) DVD-Rs burnt properly at low speed with verification.

What I'm going to try next is purchasing some expensive Sony (or similar) DVD-Rs and burn to these with the v6.1/v7 maps and try this. Perhaps the whole problem all along has been that my drive only reads top quality media and that the discs I have were basically not in a 'fit' state? (I think one of them is a DVD-RW too, which I understand isn't advised?) That's all I can put it down to.

Many thanks and several beer tokens to Carl, Stu and Darren for all the advice and info on tap  :happy2: :drinking:
Certainly intend to meet you all at some point this year and there's a pint on me awaiting...

Cheers.

- Oh, and I managed to sort a problem with intermittent speaker switching to only the right and left speaker channels on the MDI channel. Bizarrely, the HDD and SD card functions played music on both speakers happily. This looked like it was a loose connection on the ISO adapter that connects with the back of the RNS510. When holding the RNS while wiggling the back of the ISO connection, it was switching and crossing from left speaker(s) to right, back to right, then both, then right, then left again etc... I did my best to feed the wires back in and put it back in gently, tested it and things seemed fine.

All verbatim media tend to be regarded as high-quality, whereas sony discs can fall between high and average quality. You need to know the disc ID to be able to tell whether it's good or average media that's been used.

I've always used Verbs for maximum compatibility Pete, not just for the RNS but for many devices which may be sensitive to type of media used.

There are others which can work such as some brands of RIDISC but Verbs really are your best bet.

Verbs are good and I'd not use any thing else.
