Had to happen, Kerbed one of my Monza 19's :-(
« on: November 02, 2010, 11:25:53 pm »
Well after years of careful driving and parking a foot away from the kerb, I noticed my front wheel has been marked. About 1/3rd of the wheel has been kerbed. Not too deep and also just managed to graze the real outer rim (about 6mm max around the wheel) At first I thought it was just the clear coat that was scuffed but on closer inspection it looks like it has just touched the metal.  :sad1:

So What now?

I am gonna put the Pescara's on tomorrow for the winter anyway, so I can get the tyre off the Monza ready to take or deliver it to a refurber.

Who can I trust?

A1 wheels Wolverhampton,
Wheel Refurbishing. com,
BJV Engineering,
Lepsons,
???,
???

Will I get away with just 1 wheel repaired? (will it match the 3 others or is it gonna stick out like a sore thumb?)
I want it doing right, but as they are all Mint condition (except the damaged one) I really don't want to have to do all 4.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.  :happy2: (Esp from those who have had Diamond-Cut Monza's Refurbed/Repaired)

I will post some pics tomorrow, and Also I am gonna try and do some investigation work into the offending kerb.......I am quite sure I did it at the new McDonalds drive through in Lincoln.  :jumping: Tight lane is an understatement.  :fighting:

Where did you get 19's from, I thought they only came as 17/18's
Standard: Rear parking sensors, Parrot Bluetooth
Retro fitted: MFSW buttons, RCD510, Boot pop, Black Monza II, Xenons, Audi jacking points, open fog light grills.

He got them imported I think.

Anyway, I think take'em to A1 wheels and get them to have a look first.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Perfect opportunity to get all four done with Gloss Black inserts!  :jumpmove:

I've had loads of sets of these done as you know, the only problem you may find is these are not factory finished and as such the refurber will struggle to match it 100% as the colours they use for inserts etc may not be the same. I also find the finish of the Diamond Cut face is slightly different to factory finish as the laquer used is a better quality than the original (well it is at A1 anyway  :happy2: ).

Sorry to here that they arent perfect anymore they looked good at Santa Pod, and the above is why I make everyone get out and go into the resturant rather than drive through and allowing them to eat in my car  :stupid:

1. buy a new wheel (not even guaranteed to match the others either!) and keep the marked one as a spare
2. Get one refurbed and take a chance its close.
3. Get 2 refurbed as a set for one side of the car. Thereby any changes in colour/finish wont be seen, as on each side they will match.
4. Get all 4 refurbed , which means they will all match but seems a shame. Im not sure how many times the refurb process can be carried out either. But conversly as others have said you could go for a 'custom' paint style.

5. Leave it as it is and try a small repair with lacquer  :happy2: in the knowledge that at some point you will have to do 1-4 above

I am gonna keep the inserts Grey so they wont need to match them. Its just the Lacquer that they would need to match. I will give them a call tomorrow and see what they advise.

You will see from the photo's below that it will be just the outer edge that needs blending in and clear coating. If they can just do the outer edge, and leave the face as-is, is the question  :sad1:

Gonna put the Pescara's on today, and leave em on for the winter. So really I have got some time to get the Monza/Monza's sorted.  :happy2:

Yeah I think you are right John  :happy2:

Its gonna be one of those 4 options....... Hopefully number 1. TBH number 2 sounds a good idea too.  :notworthy:

bearing in mind the amount of damage I would be looking to get someone to enact a repair and seal job on that, I wouldnt think that would be worth a refurb as they will have to cut back the face changing the look of the wheel, and as said above then wait and see if any others need doing at some point in the future.

Carlo, I'm gonna join you in your pain your feeling, my wife came in last night with a look on her face, I just knew looking at her face that she's done something that I would be seriously pissed at.
She's curbed one of my black gloss huffs on the edge of a kerb  :fighting:
Also distroyed the edge protection on the tyre wall!!!!.so much for her being the better driver!!

Not happy  :sad1:
