Brake issue.
« on: November 04, 2010, 06:41:42 pm »
Hi guys and girls.

Hope you could help me with an issue I've had today.

Basically this morning I parked the car up at work and I've just back into it to come home and something has seriously changed with the brakes.

Basically, this morning the pedal travel seemed pretty normal, linear right the way through to the bulkhead in terms of braking force. Now it seems to be all or nothing, there's a slight progression zone but then it just bites, its also really really solid past this point a lot of resistance and quite hard to get any further and it feels like there's a lot more pedal travel left (from my old feeling of the pedal).

The pedal returns to its normal position when no pressure is applied (at least it feels like it).

Has anyone had any issues like this before because it certainly doesn't feel right.

Luke.

I also forgot to add that I had the brakefluid changed roughly around 6/7 weeks ago as part of the third service. If an issue was present with the fluid or the reservouir as a result of this I'm sure it'd have shown up pretty much instantly would it?

can you give us an outline of car type / age and miles?
any fault codes stored?
is the fluid level ok for the clutch mc?

does it feel the same as using the pedal with the engine off (i.e. no servo assistance) as this sounds a bit like you describe?
maybe the servo has gone?

The cars a mk5 gti, manual, 30k. No fault codes on the dash, it's being scanned this afternoon. The reservouir is full and no signs of leaks.

There seems to be a slight bit of servo assistance, however it stiffens up straight after use and does seem to take a while to return to the previous feel of the pedal. However after a couple of pumps it begins to feel like the car isn't running and the servos being pumped.

Please excuse the reply if certain bits don't make sense. I'm using my phone and it's a royal pain.

I thought that is the way most golf brakes are, especially GTIs. My car has a certain point where it bites a lot. My mates GTI brakes are very sensitive, a tap on the brakes gives a lot of braking power and it doesn't go a lot further past this point. But it inspires a lot of confidence in the brakes though.
