Looking into getting a MK5 advice needed!
« on: November 03, 2010, 11:07:20 pm »
Hi all i posted in the newbies section earlier  :happy2:  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,21224.0.html

I hope this is in the right section  :scared:

I'm thinking about getting rid of my mk3 which is on its 3rd gearbox at 142k o/e plus 2 recon boxes.

Any opinions on gearboxes? (opening a can of worms here)

I like to change gear and don't want any nasty dents in my pocket in the future so was thinking manual.

But who better to ask than you lot  :notworthy: so whats the most reliable box to go for?

I have had a quick look but can't see anything about this so i'm very sorry if its old hat to you lot  :innocent:

Welcome aboard.

Can't recall ever seeing a thread on a duff manuel gearbox or the Dsg auto box to think of it. The Dsg is very expensive to repair I believe but both it and the manuel dont seem to be an issue on the mk5 that I know of.

Good luck with the hunt and check the classified on here to pick up a good one mate.

You can buy mine if you want
Just spent well over £1.5k on it (full service, cam belt, water pump, 4 tyres, springs, top mounts etc).

The question of DSG or Manual has always been a controversial topic as it comes down to personal opinion.  As your main question is reliability then it depends what you are going to do.  If your going to tune the car then the clutch in the manual cars seems to be the weakness but I havent heard of a gearbox failure..

DSG's are capable of taking more power through the standard clutches and if maintained can be very reliable, only known issue is failure of the mechatronic which can be costly to replace but it does seem from the stories ive heard that they fail when fairly new and if they are good then they troop on.

There are two DSG cars on here that I know of that are getting on for 100k and going strong.

5Dr Black GTI, DSG, Leather, Xenons. Retrofitted - Cruise, RNS 510, MFSW, Armrest, Skoda BT, 6cd changer, Monza II's, VW speaker upgrade kit, Lux pack, High-line, new CAN gateway, Polar FIS info display, R32 tinted rear lights, RVC

To Come...NQSBBK, highline CCM.

I think the best thing you can do is get a manual.

If you're looking for what is quite possibly the best Mk5 GTI for sale currently (and ever will be  :happy2:) look no further than here:

Garth, good price and you have done some lovely work to the car but its to early for me to commit. I'm not an impulse buyer and like to look into things before i properly make my mind up. I will be buying a MK5 at some point but not until i'm 100% ready.  :happy2:

Rich, i haven't looked at the tuning section properly yet but the figure i would like is 240-250. I would be happy with that depending on what is needed and cost  :happy2:

I have read your post redrobin  :signLOL: she does what i tell her  :signLOL:
To be honest its a good point you make. I need to try it out. Also clare turned her nose up when i explained what DSG means/is so i think she also needs to try it .

She is sat here and said your a very friendly welcoming bunch  :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

Thanks to everyone for your input so far

Couple of decisions made tonight. 90% sure its gonna need to be a 5Dr as thinking about having kids! And we are both prefering manual although as said we haven't tried the DSG box, but the issues with my mk3 box make me/us want to go simple . Also needs to have leather  :jumpmove:

Nice pics - You guys look very happy  :drinking:

I want to make a tubular frame like that for my rear seats when they're out.
