Decisions - Edition 30 or MK6 GTI or........?
« on: November 04, 2010, 12:42:27 pm »
Well I have been waiting for the right car (ED 30 candy white, DSG, lowish mileage some extras if possible - although I know allot of people are in the same situation) to come along for quite some time now and I am begin to start to questioning how long I really want to hold out. I have test driven a similar car but did not have the spec I was after and was slightly over-priced in my book. I loved the DSG and was very impressed with the car overall, this in comparison to a MK5 GTI is drove a while back which was very disappointing and seemed lifeless to be honest.

I guess my question is, should I hold out for the right ED 30 or should I be looking elsewhere? I have recently found myself thinking I might fancy a MK6 GTI which would be much newer less mileage etc. But on the other hand the MK6 GTI does not have the same potential as the ED30 i.e. KO3 turbo etc. Also I can't help but think now that the MK6 is on the market it will not be long before MK5's really take the hit and I could potentially lose allot of money in a few years of ownership. I do realise however that the ED30 is a limited Ed and this will act in its favour.

Has anyone on here made the change from an ED30 to a MK6 GTI if so your comments would be greatly appreciated? If I had the funds I guess I would just get the new MK6 R in the above spec and be done with it, but to be honest £30K on a car is a scary :scared: amount of money. Hope this doesn't sound like a rambled mess just looking for an outside opinion as I'm slightly confused. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Cheers

David

Mk6 Golf R, Mk5 Pirelli, Sirocco R, Audi s3 and seat leon cupra r all have the K04 turbo hence you could consider these as alternatives.

The pirelli edition is the same as the edition 30 but with different seat coverings, yellow stitching and pirelli alloys. Being newer, they have lower mileage but also slightly more pricey.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I'd personally buy a MK6 GTi over an Edition 30. They're a newer car, the residuals will be better, the interior is better, it's more lively. IMO it's a more complete car.

ED 30 in candy white is as rare as rocking horse s**t. I found one close to me last week, hi line mfsw etc & it sold same day it came in. Salesman said '' i've lost count'' of the number of the number of calls we have had for this.
Could have sold it over & over again.
ED35. Standard factory condition.

If specification is the only thing holding you back from finding a white Ed30 DSG then be more creative with your requirements, some things are easily retro-fitted and often without great expense, so as long as you get the major things you want such as xenon lights rear parking sensors etc (these being the most difficult to retro properly in my opinion) then get a car and enjoy making it into the car you want.

5Dr Black GTI, DSG, Leather, Xenons. Retrofitted - Cruise, RNS 510, MFSW, Armrest, Skoda BT, 6cd changer, Monza II's, VW speaker upgrade kit, Lux pack, High-line, new CAN gateway, Polar FIS info display, R32 tinted rear lights, RVC

To Come...NQSBBK, highline CCM.

I'd rather have a billy basic Golf R than a specced up GTI if I was spending 30 big ones. It has better looks, better performance and 2+2WD.

I have to agree with the above. Too many people get hung up about spec and many highly specced second hand cars tend to be overpriced for their condition (there's more than a few Golfs I've viewed that have had thousands and thousands spent on them with all the factory options but the car has still been poorly driven and looked after by the previous owner).
Personally I'd much rather get a fairly basic spec car in excellent condition and add a few bits myself via the forums than wait forever for my 'ideal' car.
Overall condition is King where second hand cars are concerned. Colour and spec come a poor second to me.
Also as to which model of Golf is best for your needs, the only way to decide is to get out there and test drive loads. You can pick up a mk6 GTI for under £20k and yet there are dozens of pre-owned ones advertised for £28k plus which puts you bang into ex-demo R territory.
A mk6 GTI will map to 260 - 270 ish BHP with just a stage one, which on a basic road car is plenty and not a million miles from a stage 1 ED30 or Pirelli. If you plan track use then the K04 is always going to be better as the power is produced further up the rev band.
Common perception is that a mk6 is just a lightly facelifted mk5. But there's a lot more to it than that which you only really notice when you've lived with one for a while.

.
It's all down to individual personal preferences rather than one being 'better' than the other.

I don't like the Mk6 GTI front end nor the interior when compared with the Mk5 GTI or Ed30. I like the Golf R though.

The performance mods and tunability are do-able on all of them.

This tells you something the ED30 is a very sought after car , I bet a mk6 wouldnt have generated as much interest

Is that the one at Blackburn VW? I was a day late on that. They could have got a grand more for it.

Like the OP I am also after a cw ed30 but am not fussed about DSG. I've been close on a few but always someone has got there before me. CW ed30s have a waiting list of would-be buyers, it's a bloody feeding frenzy when one comes up.

Also like the OP I'm starting to get fed up waiting. I am toying with the idea of a cw mk6 gti but they often have cloth at my price point and I must have leather seats. Will not buy any car nowadays without them.

I'm also looking at mk5 r32's as well.
