MK5 Edition 30 pruchase advice
« on: November 04, 2010, 02:09:14 pm »
Hi,

I am test driving a ED30 this weekend and need some advice on what to look out for and what I should be offering.

It's a 3 door, red, manual, with 33,000 miles on the clock and the price is £13,000.

Any issues that would be occuring with this particular model?

Also, what is the current road tax and what is the cost of a service etc. General yearly costs?

Thanks for any advice.
C

Be ready for the 40k service - Cambelt, waterpump + Full engine & filter service + Brake fluid etc...

Mine recently cost £650 > (although i have the DSG so the gearbox oil change is £150)

They are very well built cars so I wouldn't expect any problems. Although most people on here will say to change the diverter valve to the new revision D (£50). ( i did. but turns out the original was perfect)

Other than that, the price sounds good, so good luck with the sale  :pomppomp:

EDIT: with regards to runnning costs.

I usually get 300 miles out of a £65 tank of V power fuel.
£240 a year for tax
And tyres wont last long if your an idiot like myself

"Be ready for the 40k service - Cambelt, waterpump + Full engine & filter service + Brake fluid etc..."
Hopefully I can get them to do this before I purchase?

"Mine recently cost £650"
Holy Moses!

Will research that thanks!

Great stuff.

Bit fastidious when it comes to purchasing a car. Got a MK3 1.4 7 years ago. Did loads of research, avoided the dodgy one's and the car is still going strong. Worth getting info from people in the know!

Only reason I am selling up is because I have itchy feet and always wanted a GTI. It just happens that there is a ED30 for sale at a decent price from a reputable dealer. Fingers crossed!

Kepp the advice coming.

Sounds good! The only thing is I will be strapped for cash for some time, that's why I have to make a good decision. Would love to think that this ED30 is going to be as good (reliability-wise) as my MK3 CL.

Oh yes, forgot to ask Keano "diverter valve to the new revision D". Not too savvy here. What is the diverter valve?

"diverter valve to the new revision D". Not too savvy here. What is the diverter valve?

Diverter valve is a recirculating dump valve.

The OEM one tends to rip the diaphragm wheras the revision D fits the same in 5 mins and is a piston type which is much more reliable and only costs around £40-50
Golf R gone.

Would there be any point in mentioning this during sale?

I would mention it. It may be that a previous owner has already had this done.

The Timing belt on my current golf hasn't been replaced yet and mechanic says it's fine. The car is 13 years old with 78,000 miles on the clock.
