If a Coil Pack is going, But does not show a CEL, will it log a fault code?

I ask because today whilst accelerating onto the motorway the car felt like it was mis-firing. At first i thought it was just loosing traction a bit due to the wet. But as there was no flashing light on the dash i discounted this. Anyway on the way back home i had to go on the motorway again and it did the same thing whilst accelerating on to the motorway. It only does it a couple of times and it's only on WOT.

So when i got back just now i Scanned the car but it had no fault codes 

Could it be the traction control kicking in (i find this odd at 60+ mph as i never normally have it) with the roads being wet or could it be a coil pack on the way out and it won't show a fault till it actually fails??

I know on the mk4 1.8T it didn't log a fault code when it was intermittant, after it got a bit worse there was a general misfire code, only when it was proper fecked did it narrow it down.

Not sure if the newer ECU's are any more on the ball.

if a coil pack has gone then it will log a fault, it did on mine.

Isn't that usually a sure-sign way of knowing a coil pack is on it's way out?

You should be able to log it and see which cylinder it is. Maybe buy a spare just in case.

A slight misfire at speed may not produce a warning CEL. A certain threshold must be exceeded for the light to come on and a fault code stored.
As you have a vcds cable, you're best live logging block 015 to see if it picks up any misfires.

Another way to find out which coilpack needs replacing is to sniff it and it's the one which smells nasty. Honest, I'm not kidding - a VW Assist man told me.

I've got 3 as when my last one went i bought 4 as i was told that they will probably all go shortly after. It's been nearly 50K miles since my last one went

as above on my audi done one then a few days later onother one went just done them all not to expesive for audi that is .dont know about golf

Well this is very strange.

I've been out this morning and done a few logging runs with the Traction Control off.

Feck all wrong  

Block 115 showed a max of -0.8 correction on any cylinder.

So i tried it with the TC switched back on and hey presto the prob came back, again nothing on the logs. So it seems if the TC kicks in for a split second it doesn't flash on the dash.

It was only in the daylight this morning that i noticed they had re tarmac'd the surface which could explain why it's a bit slippier than normal. Other than that i haven't a clue why it's happening.

But it's not a Coilpack going. Knowing my luck it will be an injector
