When it's settled, bear in mind that various sigs should change how it's styled so that it's visually consistent. It is in fact a logo, or more technically known as a Logotype when lettering (aka type).
A consistent logo will reinforce and promote the site's graphic identity far more effectively.
Sorry for the lecture but you're talking to a Corporate Identity specialist (retired). I had clients such as Coca-Cola so know a thing or two - Such as don't mess with their logo or you'll meet their heavyduty Atlanta lawyers!
