brake peddle hissing, advise on changing servo please
« on: November 10, 2010, 06:38:43 pm »
Only had the car 6 weeks, and so far done the usual, oil, spark plugs, air filter, then noticed water leak so changed water flange and seal, and done coolant change, then dv had to be changed as car was only pushing 140 bhp, then got a revo remap very pleased with the results, changed front pcv today just as a precaution,

And now think my servo as packed in, get a hissing sound when I press the brake peddle and no breaks to speak of, so don’t think I will do the lotto this week my luck is crap,  my question is has any one on here changed the servo on there mk5 before, looks a pig of a job due to its location, will be doing the job on the weekend, Steelers want £199 + vat for the unit, was hoping to get vcds next, would be great full for any advice on changing the servo, thanks in advance

This is from Elsawin but ive had to mess with the pics so they are not in the right place the writing should be to the side of the pics but you should be able to get the jist of it.

Removing
–   Note or request radio code on vehicles with coded radio if necessary.
–   Disconnect battery → Rep. Gr.27.
Vehicles with diesel engine:

–   Disconnect wiring connector -1- and loosen rear spring-type clip on intake hose.

–   Loosen spring-type clip -arrow- and pull hose off air cleaner housing

–   Remove securing bolt from air cleaner housing -arrow-.
–   Pull air filter housing upwards out of brackets and remove it.

Continuation for all vehicles:
–   Removing and installing battery → Rep. Gr.27.
–   Remove battery carrier.
–   Lay out sufficient lint free clothes in area of engine and gearbox.
–   Draw off as much brake fluid as possible from brake fluid reservoir using brake filling and bleeding unit -VAS 5234- or extraction unit -V.A.G 1869/4-.

Vehicles with manual gearbox:

–   Clamp clutch master cylinder supply hose -B- with special tool 3094.
–   Pull off feed hose -B- for clutch master cylinder.

Continuation for all vehicles:
–   Pull connector -A- off float warning indicator sender.
–   Separate connector from brake light switch -F- (vehicles as of week 45/05 only).
–   Remove brake fluid reservoir. To do this press locking tabs on the reservoir outwards and simultaneously pull the brake fluid reservoir out of the sealing plugs.
–   Unscrew brake lines -1- from brake master cylinder and seal brake lines with plugs from repair kit Part No. 1H0 698 311 A.
–   Remove nuts -2- on brake master cylinder.
–   Remove heat shield, if part of original equipment.
–   Carefully take brake master cylinder out of brake servo unit.
–   Pull vacuum hose out of brake servo.

Vehicles with manual gearbox:

–   Release cable -1-, unbolt support bracket -2- and place it to side → Rep. Gr.34.
Continuation for all vehicles:
–   Remove trim on driver side → Rep. Gr.70
As of week 45/05, brake light switch is no longer located on mounting bracket.

–   Pull connector -1- off brake light switch.
–   Remove brake light switch -2- by turning 45° to left.
–   Remove air duct -3-.
–   Remove cover -4-.
–   Separate brake pedal from brake servo → Chapter.

–   Unscrew nuts -1- from brake servo.
–   Remove both upper nuts -2- from bearing bracket.
–   Carefully remove brake servo from vehicle.

Cheers

Darren
