Stand your ground Drexel and insist on new wings.Remind them that the 3 year warranty starts from scratch once the work has been carried out.Remember, the only cure to stop rust coming back is to cut it out and replace with new metal or replace the offending panel.Good look mate. :happy2:

Took my 07 plate into the local VW bodyshop. Took photos of both arches, nothing showing yet on passenger side, and said they would send the pictures and report off to VW. He did say though that the damage wasn't covered under warranty as it is not a corrosion problem but a mechanical defect which would be repaired under goodwill. He also said that because if this then the wings wouldn't be replaced but instead repaired unless I was willing to buy the wings myself and they would spray and replace them. Wings were roughly £100 each. Thought I would post this on here to see what you guys thought of the claim that it is a mechanical defect rather than a corrosion problem.

Funny they should use the goodwill phrase as they uses the same with me today. As per earlier in this thread mine is in for repair. Well taking longer now as initially it seems head office had it down for repair of one wing where I was told by the dealer replacement. Well to cut the story the repair shop had to send further pics to head office to prove couldn't be repaired and whilst chatting to the chap at the dealer he said these are being fixed under goodwill rather than defect as it is under the paint not corrosion warranty, as outside in not inside out rust.

Just glad it is being done, but heads up to anyone going to the dealers about the same

So dropped it off with VW Mansfield last night - and they called me lunch time today to say that VW have agreed 100% on the tailgate and the drivers rear quarter too :jumpmove:

I'm giving them another £400 to paint pretty much the rest of the car - excluding roof.

Im happy - as long as its a good job - but talking to the paint shop manager and the paint assessor - they both seemed good guys, so I am hopeful of a satisfactory result!

Just had my drivers side wing replaced and passenger side repaired under warranty, passenger was repaired as it was barely rusted, litrally one tiny bubble, so small i couldnt find it when i tried to point it out to them :signLOL:
Went through with no questions asked though! Also had my coils replaced for a recall whilst it was there!

I had both my front wings and the tailgate done under warranty.  When I collected the car I found the job card file in my glove box!  It includes a 9 page technical service handbook so they very much know all about the problem and how to resolve it!

The repair cost calculation forms show a quoted cost of £508.30 + vat for the job.

My car has done 95K miles so I also had the front bumper and bonnet resprayed due to stone chips.  They did a lovely job and the car is looking great for its age and miles.

Very interesting! You don't happen to have a scanner handy to share the knowledge with the rest of us do you? Pretty please!

Only been there for parts and were very helpful. However, had my front nearside wing replaced a couple of months back by VW - went to Shepherds in bishops stortford. So if you don't get any joy in Chelmsford try there. They hadn't had many people coming in, only one last year before me but it went through fine. They are a lot smaller than the chelmo VW so chances are they have had queries on rust.

Best of luck with it  :happy2:

I took mine into Pullman in Sunderland, the guy took paint depth readings photos, the lot, told me he would be in touch after he had spoke to Main VW, got back to me telling it was a Mechaincal fault and that the mud guard on the inside of the wind was rubbing on the wing causing it to blister, what a load of cosh!! I have now bought myself two brand new wings from the dealer, and am getting a mate to paint them! Gonna cost bout 600 all in, just couldnt be bothered with VW and all the hassel! The car was also under warrenty then and has a full VW service history, with only 56000 on the clock!!

Mine went to Pullman at Sunderland and had the wings and forward ends of the cills repaired and painted under warranty. Mines a 2004 car with 113k on it and I'd only had it 4 weeks, and that was with only a part service history with 1 stamp missing !
It's total luck of the draw, mind you they wouldn't repair the rust at the rear badge though.

Good for you in getting the two wings replaced - but why then didnt they cover the boot badge area?

Mine's been for inspection at a dealer here in NI and am waiting to hear - guy seemed to think they'd do the boot but not my wings! I'm going to argue and then take it to VW UK.

This inner guard thing is complete rubbish - surely it has to be considered a build fault???
