Has anyone had any problems in the NW? I tried Smith Knight Fay in Bolton and no-one ever got back to me so was thinking about taking it elsewhere??

I had rust on the sills of my 2006 gti and it went to Smith Knight Fay's body shop in Oldham to be repaired. They made a complete mess of the repair first time, see:

I think the Bolton dealership is in the same Inchape franchise so would probably send your car to the same bodyshop if they approve your claim.

Thankfully my car was fixed properly in the end but beware and make sure they do the job properly!

Also, I see there are some old posts on this thread where people haven't got VW to pay 100% of their claims for rusty sills - the work I had done was paid for fully as rust on the sills is a known manufacturing defect covered by a Technical Service Bulletin.

When I spoke to VW last week about my returning wing rust (only repaired 7 months ago), I questioned why weren't the wings replaced instead of "repaired", I was told they don't replace, they just repair. Now from speaking to a friend of mine who works in the body repair business, only surface rust can be repaired, anything more it can't. Wouldn't it be more beneficial for VW if they did the job properly the first time? hopefully they get it right this time, I'm just waiting for the confirmation.

My VW dealer (their affiliated bodyshop) told me that if my wings were too far gone to repair they would replace them free of charge. They repaired mine free of charge.

I'm sure they'll always try a repair, before replacing wings.

When mine went in last month I was told they'd try and fix the original wings, but within an hour of it being in I got a call saying new wings were being requested through VW.

Problem being the way this rust comes through. It eats it's way through from the inside - by the time we notice it, the wing is crumbling.
Thus my (non expert) opinion is that a car with this problem should automatically get new wings by default as it isn't a filler/touch up job.

I was also told by the bodyshop that VW have refused claims from people who have let it go too long before getting in touch - saying it could have been nipped in the bud earlier (and likely bodged the old wings).

I got my car back friday :)
So under warranty I've had 2x new wings,new door strips, both sides fully painted and inside door shuts.Really happy with it and cant thank vw enough

When you say 'new door strips' do you mean the thin strips painted in black that run between the rear windows on a 5 door and at the back of the front windows and front of the back windows if you see what i mean!

The reason I ask is that I went to VW Taunton and they took photos etc. and I was told these were not part of the body and were not under the rust warrany.

Just popped into VW up here in St Andrews. They said that the wings are covered under warranty, as long as no work has previously been carried out. I got an appointmant on Fri ref the door shuts on the 5 door.

Said they are seeing alot of the wing rust checked mine but mine seem to be ok.

Result!!!! VW Chelmsford, couldn't be more helpful! VW have agreed 100% to do two front wings and tailgate and also provide courtesy car!! Job done!!!

Did they agree to new wings or to try and repair first?? Mine goes in to Chelmsford on the 27 of this month
