My 08 Ed30 (Candy) is currently with VW (Hopefully picking it up tomorrow) having tailgate rust issue fixed (Tailgate off, glass out, rust sorted, paint tailgate then re-fit).

They agreed to pay 100% as goodwill gesture, That was VW in King's Lynn (Marriott Group?), got a courtesy car (Golf Cabrio) for 4 days while they fix it, only had to pay the insurance cost for courtesy car.

Will be casting my beady eye over it before I accept it back.

I'm heading into Western VW in Edinburgh where my car has been al it's life (previous owner) for it's servicing. I'd like to come across well informed to the person I speak to so am going armed with the rust .pdf document.

Question is, who do I ask to see regarding warranty claims? Service manager? Technician? Or somebody else? This VW dealer doesn't have a bodyshop at it's site so there'll not be a paint/bodywork expert there (I presume). I realise I'll have to take the car to VW in Broxburn if/when they give the go ahead to replace my wings and repair/paint my bootlid.

Any help on how to deal with the VW guy/woman would be much appreciated.  :happy2:

I assume your first point of physical contact when you walk in will be the Service Desk. If you get the feedback that they don't know what you are talking about, then politely (of course) ask to see the Workshop Manager as you've said the Bodyshop is elsewhere. Let them know it's a known issue and also that the car has been serviced by them all its life.

The key to success in all these matters is relationship: Knowing individuals and always being friendly and patient with them - Understanding their points of view.

Yeah, this was the basic idea I had. To be honest I've never used this VW dealer before (execpt to look at a few potential cars) as it's the other side of town from me. However I have been to Western VW at Edinburgh Fort Kinnaird a good few times (parts, etc for my mk4 & mk5). However as you say, RR, the car has been religiously serviced at Sighthill all it's life (altho I take it to a VAG specialist) so this is one point I'll make clear early on. I know the key to a good relationship with any shop/service is to start off on the right foot. Will try my best.   One thing I like about the PDF file is that it states that it is a common problem AND that it's most common on diesel cars.

I'll let you all know how I get on this evening.  :happy2:

They no what you are talking about there - thats where I took mine. If they know that car , the more the better -mine was supplied , serviced all its life and bought by me from Western VW Fort Kinnaird. They sent me to Broxburn where a guy came out and took pics , and took paint depths. The warranty guy is on holiday just now though. They are contacting me on 31st July to get me booked in , and even better , I'm getting their Edition 35 as a courtesy car while its done  :happy2:

Thought I'd let people know how I've got on with this.  Mine is a 2005 mk5 GTI, I've not owned it from new, bought it from an independant dealersship (non VW) it's not had the most recent service done at VW this was carried out by an indipendent VW specialist and it had no outstanding waranty on it.

Spotted a bit of rust on the top of the front arches in March (ish) had obscene quotes from bodyshops before I realised this was a pretty common issue.

Took it into VW huddersfield and was pretty streight that I wasnt happy with the issue and knew they had to take photos to investigate and send those to VW UK, which they did, the guy in VW was quite helpful and said they were getting quite a few MK5's in with this problem now.

VW Huddersfield came back to me and told me VW had accepted due to the 12 years anti corrosian waranty they give that it was something they were liable for and would be willing to pay 70% of the cost... when I asked what the 30% could come to I almost choked on my own tounge when I was told it could be up to £400!!  To this I told him I would not be willing accept this.  To this they gave me VW's contact details, I gave them a call and stated that I wanted it covered 100% by them as the body work was not acceptable being it's well within 12 years, I'd bought into the VW brand expecting very high build quality which is ceratintly not the case here and that they had already admitted liability by saying they'd pay 70%.  They then referred this to a case manager who then came back to me saying they would pay the full 100% of repair costs.  This only took 24 hours for them to come back to me.  Car is going in tomorow and I'm getting a free courtesy car to use which I'm covered by their insurance on.  So there you go.... Just hope your all having as much luck with this as me.... Just preying I dont get a fox tomorow!!

Car into VW Leicester for two new front wings today :happy2:

Bodyshop confirmed wings are beyond repair so will be replaced :jumpmove:

Unfortunately I was going to get them to spray the bonnet to cover stone chips but bodyshop pointed out recent hailstone damage so they said it would be better to replace bonnet.

Phoned my insurance company but my access is a little steep what with a holiday coming up and said premium will prob go up next time. :sad1:

So will have to live with it for now and prob go down the smart repair root when I have some extra cash roof needs sorting as well :sad1:

Courtesy car is a 61 plate black Polo with tints and nice alloys :happy2: Just a shame the seat height adjuster is broken so I feel as if my head is poking out the roof!

if they are replacing wings make sure they blend the paint onto the bonnet / bumper / doors otherwise the colour match will be off.

if they dont blend it I'd say just reject it and get them to do it properly.

As I said in my post they won't be doing the bonnet as it is not worth doing due to previous damage :happy2:

Will get a new bonnet as and when I can afford it.

I will  closely scrutinise the work when I pick the car up, from what I have heard Tornado Red is pretty good to match, gone are the days when Red used to fade.

I am more than happy that I am getting two new front wings for nothing, unlike people in the past who have had to pay VW!

Thank god i noticed this post. Was getting ready to book my car into a body shop to have the rust looked at on my front drivers side arch. Would'nt like to think how much it would have cost. I phoned gilder sheffield today and im off in friday so they can take some photos. Fingers crossed for a good result.
Great post. Keep spreading the word.

Took my car to Gilders Sheffield and they sorted out the arches. Did a great job and can't praise them enough. Bit of tooing and froing between the dealers and Vwuk to finally get them to agree to pay 100% for the wings but can't fault gilders, staff were great. Be prepared for a rubbish courtesy car though, Ibiza estate....euuughh!

Said that I expected quality when I bought into the VW brand, its poor that a 7 year old car has issues with rust. I also referred to the pdf document circulated within Vwuk where they basically admit that its a known fault. I dont have access to the pdf document anymore but some people on here do...any kind person out there has access could you sort robjh with a copy?

Hi All,

I have slight rust on the front wing and rust around the rear badge, unexpected on a 7 year old car I must admit. Is there anywhere I can get a copy of the PDF document to arm myself with when going to the main dealer. Car has 89k and full dealter history apart from one.

Cheers

Andy
