My 07 plate is yet to show the dreaded rust on the front wings however unless ive missed something in this thread, is there a way of preventing this from happening, instead of waiting for this to happen and marching off into local VW dealership

Also for all the people who have had this repaired other than sorting out the rust by repainting/replacing the wings, what have they done to prevent this from happening again. Im guessing they have adjusted the plastic arch lining to prevent it for rubbing on the bodywork etc

Apologies if these answers are all in this thread, i've just scanned through it and havent found any exact answer  :ashamed:

When I was speaking with the dealer he said one of the things that they would do as part o the fix was to loosen the arch lining.

Not sure what else could be done but sure someone will have some thoughts  :happy2:

@ jedi - try another dealer mate!

I have been to Mansfield VW today and dealt with Malcolm in the bodyshop. A sound chap who thought my car was quite bad so hopefully VW will honour it.

He said that VW have just changed the policy on front wings - whereas before if a car needed wings they would also allow blowing in down the doors, this is now not the case. They will only accept the claim for painting the wings solely - leaving you with mismatched doors. But was told I could pay a small fee to have the blowing in done.

I also could do with the bumper and bonnet ridding of chips, and also a scratch on the rear quarter and they were quite accomodating in that i could pay a little extra and have some other bits done.

I also have slight bubbling under the rear badge/boot release, on the drivers sill step, and around rear window.

Mansfield took photos of it all.

Will keep you all informed!

When they did my arches they fitted the either a new style arch liner or fitted it differently. The little notch which rubs through from the inside is now outside the arch lip if that makes sense? If you run your hand around the arch you can feel its different.

In reply to Alan edition 30,I was assured that the lump of sponge on the inside of the wings were left out of both sides after having new wings fitted. Thus there will be no chance of any lingering dampness to cause problems. Also the repair centre that did my work also pumped the inner arche/new wings full of waxoil, something that V.W should of done in the first place :happy2:

I've got one on the inside of the wheel arch on the rear offside. Colbournes Guildford in the morning then!

It's not acceptable on a 2006 car. You have my full support. I will document my whole experience, and let you have it.

for the people that had new arches fitted... did they then also paint the bonnet, bumper and blend into the A pillar and doors?

Simple answer to JEDI-KNIGHT is no,they don't paint anything other than the affected part.I read somewhere that V.W used to flash the paint in to your doors if getting the wings done, but don't do this anymore(unless you pay for it)Besides speaking from experience they paint the wings whilst off the car.

Probably a silly question but did you guys get a free courtesy car while the work was being done?

Mine has been approved by vw to do the work but I need to call the dealer to book it in and sort out the finer details!

Certainly did Manney,I was given a brand spanking new, wait for it,Toyota Yaris :ashamed:. To be fair it was an approved repair centre that fit the new wings so I never did expect a V.W to be honest.By the way , V.W have shut their own bodyshop where i live ,that's why they use RMB (Yarm) to do the work. The warranty then starts from scratch again with them. They did a superb job by the way, excellent colour match etc. :happy2:

Just had the call to say VW have excepted 100% on the wings and cill, but they couldnt see well enough from the photos sent to them on the rear quarter and under the badge.

So pretty pleased - they said they will re-submit pics of the above areas and try them again.

Also got a quote off them (Mansfield VW aka Newbolds) to blow in the doors - paint the bonnet and bumper - and sort a scratch on the other quarter. Favourable enough price.

And I get a new 1200cc Polo as courtesy car!

Took my 07 plate into the local VW bodyshop. Took photos of both arches, nothing showing yet on passenger side, and said they would send the pictures and report off to VW. He did say though that the damage wasn't covered under warranty as it is not a corrosion problem but a mechanical defect which would be repaired under goodwill. He also said that because if this then the wings wouldn't be replaced but instead repaired unless I was willing to buy the wings myself and they would spray and replace them. Wings were roughly £100 each. Thought I would post this on here to see what you guys thought of the claim that it is a mechanical defect rather than a corrosion problem.
