I've contacted VW in hereford today as they are my closest dealer with a bodyshop.

I have rust bubbling under the paint on both front wings,o/s sill and the n/s rear quarter.

Need to get the car over to them for an inspection and pictures. Not going to be backing down on it though ;)

ANOTHER RESULT!!!!

Sorry to shout but I'm very happy about it.

I have just received a phone call to say that my rusty front wings can be repaired or replaced 100% free of charge under warranty. I wasn't expecting that good news!

I know the bodyshop manager (affiliated to my VW dealer) very well and the cause of the problem won't be refitted. The cause is the foam strip which collects moisture. I haven't asked yet why on earth there is a foam strip anyway.

I think the foam strip was something to do with stopping the wing or liner rubbing on something.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

....I'll be reporting from the bodyshop about it.

Here is the the official VW tech bulletin which will tell you all you need to know!

The foam insert was put there to help dampen engine vibration, especially on the diesel models.

Mine is going in for inspection two weeks today......

The bodyshop manager seems to think that the sponge was only fitted on diesel models??

They have had plenty of mk5s in for this though, he did say vw show no consistancy in what they pay for ie 100% or 70/30.

Will just have to wait and see what happens

....According to the PDF link posted earlier, the foam pad was modified from June 2006 (07-build) and hitherto was mainly diesels but not exclusively.

100% or 70% seems to be a bit of a lottery and I expect may be influenced on how each warranty application is presented.

I never noticed that before, but thanks for pointing it out, it's good ammo for anyone in battle with VW to authorise the claim, they have shot themselves in the foot because they have in effect admitted that it is a design fault of the foam pad causing the corrosion. I'm going to print the document off and I won't be backing down! They can foot the bill 100%!  :fighting:

Which leads to another idea - could we start a poll with model year and wether or not corrosion has occurred. Then we can see if the 'modified cut of foam pad' has remedied the issue

....That's funny! The PDF was your link.

Remember that you always get more with honey than you do with vinegar. I didn't even ask for mine to be fixed under warranty. I'm beginning to think that people take pity on me because of my age! Either that or they are scared!

No reason why you can't set one up yourself!

Indeed, I found it ages ago on a thread on another VW board. Must have been very tired at the time because I can't remember that bit at all!!
