Heated seat turning off at certain temp?
« on: November 13, 2010, 02:29:28 am »
Haha - had to happen!

The driver side heated seat works fine to a point but seems to just turn itself off after a short time? This is on any setting.

Can't really say how long, maybe 5 minutes? Sometimes less?

If I turn the dial to 0 then back on again, it works again for a short time...

Passenger side works fine and gets nice and hot! :)

Is this the sign of a faulty element in the drivers side? Or some sort of thermostat inside the seat shutting it down?

If its the element how much is this likely to cost to change over? (or is it part of the seat itself in the MK5?)

Thanks :)

The funs over already mate??

There must be a thermostat/sensor in the seat itself to stop it from over heating.

I dont have any wiring diagrams but I know a man who does......

Im sure he'll be along soon.

Lol I know! Better than they were tho at least!

Yeah it seems like either the seat sensor is detecting it's too hot and turning off or something.

Can't see it being wiring as it works if u turn off then on again etc

Maybe it's heat circulating through the element then hitting a burnt out area and shutting down?

Hopefully a wiring diagram can shed some light.

If the element was knackered it should'nt heat up at all.

I would think its got to be a sensor/thermostat somewhere in the seat.

Just a thought have you sat in both seats to see how hot they get or have you just felt them with your hand? Or sat in the drivers seat and just felt the passenger seat?

Hi mate, the passenger side was hotter for sure as my friend was like "turn it off now its too hot!" lol

The driver seat still got quite hot it just turned off shortly after (tried all 5 settings too).

You were just trying to get her to strip off werent you???

Hmm definately sounds like a stat / sensor problem.

Im sure Iv read threads before on golf heated seats heating to different temps, Ill see if I can find anything.

If you had fiddled with the aircon settings, you could have got her to smuggle some peanuts!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Hehe

I just drove the car about 15 mins down the road, put the driver heated seat on from the start, and it lasted approx 2 mins then turned itself off.

Lee, im gonna google it now mate, im sure i've read about it on the MK4's but not on a MK5 but will check now...

Hmmm, it looks like each seat has a control unit.

I have part numbers of

7L0 959 772 D
Then it says
1K-6B081 200*
1K-6P018 000*
1K-6U013 200*
1K-6W565 000*

QTY : 2

So that indicates there are maybe either a) 2 controllers per seat, or b) one controller for each seat.

That would make sense, as a controller in theory would 'control' the level of heat channeled into the seat, and if faulty would shut down/off etc

Stu, Darren, any ideas on this one?

Further research!

Again, same thing, so turning to 0 then back to 5 (or whatever setting 1,2,3,4) brings the heat back, it then goes again, if turning to 0 and back again it works again but keeps shutting off.

Can anyone confirm whether there is a control unit under each seat? Or a thermostat / wire of some sort?

Thanks,

Sean

There HAS to be a sensor/thermostat of some sort!!!

Just had an idea folks.

Obviously by swapping the loom extending the driver side loom to passenger side loom I used extra cables.
But to put the passenger side connector to driver side the kufate loom did not need touching as it was way long already as it's essentially meant to stretch across the car in a lhd vehicle so is very long.

So long I had to wrap it round in a circle a few times and bundle it under the seat.

This could cause this to happen right? Or would it just not work full stop?

In otherwords am I going to have to cut the driver side connector off and shorten the kufatec loom?

sounds like a faulty sensor Sean but you could try stretching the wire out so its not making a coil so to speak

I shortened the excess wire, neatened it all, reconnected... Same problem.

I've had enough so taking it to VW instead! Looks like I've bought a dodgy drivers seat.
