NOT VW BUT HELP NEEDED!!!
« on: November 13, 2010, 04:06:29 am »
I have a 1994 vauxhall astra only a basic 1.4 model for pure abuse and work reasons!!!

I had a flat battey yesterday, totally dead, so charged it for a few hours and put it back on. It started first time so i checked the charging and that was 14.3volts so i think that is normal.

Now though I have noticed that the battery light comes on and off when it wants. But when you turn it off and take key out the battery light stays on. I guess this is why the battery drained.

I also noticed that when you turn the lights on, the rev counter goes to '0'.!! I am thinking this is a earth problem?

Any help would be welcome!

Thanks JAMES

id check and clean the earth strap on the alternator mate, i had something similar on an old astravan abit back.
Mine was poor charging and the above sorted it
Plus it doesnt cost anything and eliminates it if its not that

Check the earths on the top of the alternator bracket where it bolts onto the back of the head, check the 2 cables on the alternator, remove them (after disconnecting battery) and clean them up, if this doesnt help try adding an alternator earth cabke (halfords sell these cheaply) and attatch it to the alternator bracket and the chassis leg.
