Help: Can't turn off rear wiper

I just reversed out of a parking space and the rear wiper came on for no apparent reason and it won't turn off :( I tried putting rear wiper on and off, putting front and rear washers on, wipers on every speed and still it won't stop ...

Please help before I rip the darn thing off

Does it come straight back on if you switch the engine off?. Could be faulty motor if so, so maybe remove fuse?.

Switched the engine off after a 45 min journey with the bloomin thing on and it has now gone off thank god. I haven't put it in reverse again since but suspect it will happen again next time I do.

Is it supposed to come on when you put the car in reverse ?

Do you have the auto wiper on? If it's on, then when you select reverse, will automatically wipe the rear view if the front wipers are activated by rain.

Shouldn't happen in the dry. Shouldn't happen (I think) if auto wipers are off.

There are reports of a faulty wiper motor causing havoc. May be worth searching the forum for the problem.

Had this on mine where the wiper would just switch on whenever it wanted and the only way to stop it was to switch the ignition off.  VW changed the wiper motor under warranty.  Apparently it's a known fault.

Excuse me for asking what is probably a very obvious question but I have only driven the car about 4 times.. how do you turn the auto wipers off. I'm sure they are on as when I have it in the intermittent position (first click up on the stalk) they come on and go off when they please and on the odd occasion they come on at the right time

just put it one click down, or as far down as possible i thing and thats of, one click up is auto, 2 clicks is constant and 3 is constant quick, i only use auto, and just use the sensitivity selecter to clear the windscreen if they are being slow :)

So is the little switch on the top of the wiper stalk for sensitivity rather than delay time like in the good old days?

I think it depends on whether you have auto-wipers activated or not (I may be incorrect about this).

Autowipers seem to work really well yesterday when it was actually raining... so at least I should be ok for most of the year

To activate the auto wipers push the stalk up to the first position (intermittant wipe).  The switch on the top varies how sensitive they are.

The only way to deactivate auto wipers, is not to use the intermittant setting.

How rubbish if only they stuck with the same intermitent set up they had on the Mk3 Golf/Corrado that set up rocked... I liked it so much that I'm installing the same relay on my old VW camper so it will have the same functionality... wonder if the relay will fit in the Mk5
