Smoftah's Build Thread - Black 3dr. Retrim Pics Added!!!
« on: November 19, 2010, 11:35:59 am »
Hi everyone,

I finally picked up my Golf GTi yesterday and have many plans for the car.

I would just like to say this is a great site and even in this short period of time the members have been very friendly and helpful!

I have had it less than 4 hours before it went straight to the bodyshop to begin the modding!

This is what it looked like when I bought it yesterday:

First up was the R32 style rear lower bumper which I got from fleebay. It was very poor quality and required a lot of work to sort it out and is still not 100% flush.

I was quite annoyed when it was described as 100% perfect fit.

First we stripped the back of the car which ended up like this:

Then we sprayed the rear bumper top in Met black again and colour coded the lower groove in the same colour as the inners of the 18" Monza wheels:

We also used E-Tech spray to darken the rear lights and I am happy with the result  :happy2:

I am going today to have 4 new Michelin Tyres put on but I can not wait for Monday as the car will be going to have a full leather retrim in tan / truffle leather! Also the rear window will be tinted

Cruise control to be fitted on Thursday when I get the car back and that is it for now!  :signLOL:

Can forget these too  :signLOL:

Nicely specced car, with all the right toys by the look of it, interested to see what the re-trim is like.  Rear bumper looks good considering the issues you had with it, although not the first time have heard about someone having issues with the fitment of R32 lower with GTI exhaust exits, someone else bought one and was disappointed.  Looks like they made a good job of it!  :happy2:

5Dr Black GTI, DSG, Leather, Xenons. Retrofitted - Cruise, RNS 510, MFSW, Armrest, Skoda BT, 6cd changer, Monza II's, VW speaker upgrade kit, Lux pack, High-line, new CAN gateway, Polar FIS info display, R32 tinted rear lights, RVC

Very nice mate, If you have done this many mods in 24 hours then I can promise you won't stop at the retrim. I was similar, this forum takes your money, and throws it at every possible mod you can get!

It took us 5 hours to get the bumper to what you see but it is still not perfect - so in a week after the retrim its going back to the bodyshop so we can finish it off properly.

I really suggest that no one buys that lower bumper unless they know someone in a bodyshop as the labour charge will be big to get it upto sctratch.

I complained to the company on ebay and they have just refunded me £60 to help pay for some of the work it has taken so I am happy with that

I am looking forward to losing a lot of money then  :signLOL:

Nice car you found at a really good price  :happy2: I like the rear bumper, having the standard exhaust hole but in a r32 bumper makes it look fresh as i havent seen many done and now i know why if it took the bodyshop that long to do it. You Sir certainly dont hang around. Look forward to seeing the pics of your retrim.

Top work so far.

Thanks, Yes I am very happy with the car. Before I bought it I had an idea of exactly what I wanted it to look like and life's too short to wait for things  :signLOL:

light tints look good matey :happy2:, did you use a red tint or is it smoked for them??

I used Back E-Tech spray and some clear lacquer to get that result.

Looking good chap, very eager to see this retrim you mentioned!  :happy2:

Me too I can't wait!  :signLOL:

Loving the rear bumper Smoftah!! completely transforms the car. I've got to ask as i'm not to clued up when it comes to body work etc but obviously the R32 rear has the exhausts out the middle so i'm guessing these had to be filled/smoothed etc and then a cut made where the standard GTI exhaust goes?. Feel free to call me stupid if i'm way off haha.

Thanks, this is a R32 style rear bumper, it is not actually an R32 rear bumper so the hole for the exhaust was in the right the place for the GTi from when it was made.  :happy2:
