Once upon a time, before I was remapped, a friend and fellow Mk5 GTI owner invited folks on a forum (before this one was born) to visit AP Racing in Coventry with an oem Monza 17" wheel. Muggings here decided that as no-one else was volunteering, probably because most folks had Monza 18's, I would drive the 3-hours each way journey. AP wanted to check whether one of their brake kits could fit the Monza 17 and Volkswagen weren't willing to lend them one. As you can see from the pic, and because I'm a picture whore, the fit was successful:
AP were very pleased and out of curiosity I asked why so much enthusiasm and was told because of the European market. I then jokingly asked what's in it for me... There was a very pregnant pause and a serious face, during which I was regretting asking the question... And then came the offer I couldn't refuse but with the proviso that AP fitted the brakes there in Coventry and at mutual convenience. I actually did refuse the offer until later that summer when I experienced brake fade on my oem brakes and nearly found myself in the passenger seat of a large truck on a roundabout. A phone call was made and off I went to Coventry the day before I drove to Germany, where, of course, I thoroughly tested those nice new shiny AP brakes.
That was in late 2006 and I've always been extremely happy with my AP 4-pots. They told me that their 6-pots were overkill on a Golf unless doing competitive racing events. They feel smooth and pedal feedback is direct and positive - Which is the big criticism of VW and Audi oem brakes. In just two words they are Confidence Inspiring. Voila!
