Retro fit MFSW - what parts will I need ?
« on: November 09, 2010, 07:08:05 pm »
Hi...

I have a paddle-shift MFSW which I'd like to fit to my Golf GTD 140 DSG, 06, but an '07 model.  It has a mid-line cluster.

Am I right in thinking I'll just need a new control module, and possibly a new slip ring ?

Are correct part numbers important for this mod ?

I'm guessing some re-coding will be needed... can you point me to a good "how to" ?

I'm hoping to track down the parts from a forum member/ebay, or breakers yard... any idea what I should expect to pay for used parts ?

All advice/links welcome.

TIA,

Regards,

Mark.

Hi
i would say that your 2006 car has the correct slip ring
You will need a Highend Steering control unit

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions

stick to type 2, I used 1K0-953-549-AK  on a DSG Gti although most highend versions will support Paddle change
You would also need the Mfsw Airbag Loom 1K0 971 584 C
I have one listed on ebay

Once fitted it will need coding unless the coding in the unit matches

Expect to pay
Control Unit £40 - £80 (ebay) or £125 new
Loom £10 - £25 (ebay) or £30 new
Genuine VCDS VAG-COM HEX-USB + Genuine Vag Commander + Genuine VAG Tacho + Genuine VAG CAN PRO  + RNS Manager for Video in Motion and New Pin Code for RNS510

Cluster and Key coding

Location Great Yarmouth

Hi Eddie...

Thanks for getting back to me with your info.

If you can let me know your ebay listing number for the Mfsw Airbag Loom 1K0 971 584 C, I might place a bid, or make a buy it now offer.

Your help is much appreciated :)

Regards,

Mark.

Hi Eddie/Anyone...

I have another question.

If I get the type 2, 1K0-953-549-AK, will that work with my current midline cluster OK?, and also with the highline cluster I am planning to have fitted in the future?

Ross-Tech list 1K0-953-549-AK as highline.

I just need confirmation it will work with my current midline cluster, and with the highline cluster I will have fitted in the future.

Once I know for sure I can track one down & buy.

Oh, BTW, hopefully the slip ring I currently have should be OK... but, if I do need to get another one, how much roughly should I expect to pay on eBay for a used one, and how much for a new one from a dealer ?

TIA,

Mark.

That controller is fine for mid and highline clusters although there are many other that would be suitable as listed on Ross Tech. Iv had AQ and BK.

If you have midline now you should have the correct slip ring but if you dont I think their about 65 from the dealers or you can pick them up for 20-30 on ebay.

Hi Lee...

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Great, so it will work on my current midline, and a highline when I get one fitted.

How can I find out what type of slip ring I have.  Would a phone call to a VAG dealer, giving them my VIN number, give me the info I need ?

Thanks again,

Mark.

The steering wheel module will be fine with your midline until you upgrade.

You could go to the dealer but their pretty useless and I know from experience that even by checking your vin its not always accurate!!!

If you remove the top cowling of the steering column you will see the slip ring and be able to see the part sticker.

I have vcds but I dont think the slip ring shows up on a scan??

OK... so the only way to know is to look at the part number.

You also said that "The steering wheel module will be fine with your midline until you upgrade"... really?... this conflicts what others have said...just the loom needed while I have the midline cluster ?

No I meant until you upgrade as in it will work with your midline until you upgrade to the highline  :happy2:
