Blithering Fool Destroys Vent - Can you help!?
« on: March 04, 2010, 12:14:32 pm »

When messing about taking the Head unit out I managed to partially separate the fascia from the vent assembly! (pic below)
Consequently the passenger side vent slats (and plastic mouldings they clip into) fell out…… OH CR*P….
Has anyone else managed to be such a blithering fool and managed to successfully put them back in?
I tried last night – but in the dark with a torch in my mouth I had no luck.
If anyone can help I would be most appreciative.

Here's a photo of the fascia and vent assembly I partially seperated.
Can i remove this whole assembly to try and do it on a bench or will it trigger the airbag light when disconnecting the looms?

I have taken this part out a few times for different reasons and put it back in with no problems,
It may be that the rear part has to go in at a certain angle, as does the front part (making it quite tricky) make sure that none of the wires are squashed between the pieces of plastic, and also that the screw is in properly on the inside.
Hope this makes sense to you?

Gently pry the top bit you have hold of out. You will see the join at both sides where it meets the surround for the head unit.
Don't worry about the air bag or hazzard light switch.
Once you have it out of the car putting it all back together is quite easy.

Btw you need to take all this and more off to take out the head unit.

Don't worry, done much the same. Just remove the entire unit, disassemble it completely, and then carefully reassemble.

And if its completely broken, then I have a replacement coming for my car, as the centre diffuser (non directional vent) is broken and rattles, so I will have a spare lower unit with vents to sell on!

Just remember, if you disconnect the the airbag and light sensor wiring (which is fine), makes sure you don't put the ignition back on until you have replugged them back in. Otherwise you will have an airbag warning light and a climate control fault code in VCDS (not the end of the world, you just need VCDS to get rid of them).

Once the whole unit is removed is it easy to pry the fascia off the vent housing then?
It all feels so damn delicate!
Cheers chaps for your help - you've seriously put my mind at rest.

I've done this and ended up replacing the top part of the dash. The top part is the hardest, pulls upwards from the back, then at the front it get's stuck which causes frustration and leads to breaking the vents :signLOL:. All you have to do is unclip the part right in the centre which holds on, use a trim removal piece or something similar. Hope that helps.

I have broken my vents tonight trying to remove the head unit. Does anyone have the vent unit to sell or know the part number?

Thanks in advance
