MK5 Issue's

Hi all,

I have trolled through the forums yet cannot find an answer so any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Basically a few days ago i noticed that my rear wipers and washers did not work. the front washers and wipers worked fine however. I assumed it was the fuse, so I changed the fuse ad now, the back wipers and front wipers work fine, however neither of the washers work, and I cannot even hear the motor on them trying to spray the water. what's even stranger is that now when I pull the stick back to do the washer, the front wipers go as they should, but the back wipers also start going????

I have no idea what is going on with it so any help would be fantastic!

On a separate note, I have another issue which I have dealt with before by taking it to a garage but wondered if anyone could help, the bonnet is stuck, it pops when I pull the lever inside the car, but the catch on the bonnet isn't working, is there a way of opening it? I have done this before but I cannot remember!

Have you plugged it into vcds to see if there are any errors?

I think the bonnet is a know issue where the latch gets stuck people have had to take apart the front of their car to sort it. Maybe some well directed wd40?

When my catch stuck I used a thin screw driver to just push the catch a bit further back and it them popper up. Lubed her up nicely afterwards and she never fails to pop her hood for me anymore! As for wipers etc could it be a relay as oppose to a fuse? VCDS will be the simplest way to diagnose that issue.

I can't advise you re the wipers/washers issues but have experienced the stuck bonnet issue though one which wouldn't close rather than wouldn't open. My VW dealer told me that opening a stuck closed bonnet is much more difficult than my issue was.

You'll need to replace the lower unit which houses the loop catch and spring... After you've managed to open the bonnet.

The bonnet issue is not uncommon on Mk5's.

....I did this when the problem first appeared but a few months later it got worse and got stuck (in Germany, on a trackday, not good!) - The spring had lost its spring. For peace of mine it's better to replace the whole unit. I used it as an excuse to also get AeroCatches but that's not everybody's cup of tea.

If its like mine then before you start removing bits of the car just lift it up with your hand and loot at the catch. On mine it was just catching slightly but enough to stop it lifting. Like I said, a small screwdriver was enough to just move the catch enough to pop the hood properly.

....Yes, I assumed from the OP that the bonnet was stuck closed and not at first stage of release allowing finger access which you describe.

i think both problems are related.  car thinks the bonnet is open (sh8gged catch) and thus deletes the washers.

new catch, or oil it, and all should be well.

I had the bonnet issue on my first MK5 - just used a screwdriver to push the catch back and then lubed it up! :)
