Recommend me some tyres
« on: February 18, 2009, 08:56:41 am »
Hi guys,

time has come to replace the front tyres on my GTi. I currently have Dunlop SP Sports on 17" Monzas.

Should I go with another set of Dunlops or is there another tyre that will work better? I'd particularly like a bit more grip!

Cheers Andrew

the Good year eagle F1 asymmetric tyres are supposed to be brilliant in dry and wet.

Cool, I'm guessing you'd have to pair asymmetric fronts with asymmetric rears?

I have GSD3 on my current car (not a Golf...) and they transformed the handling compared to the old Contis. They don't wear amazingly well but are great in the wet and the dry. They don't like the cold so much though.

What's the general opinion of F1's on the GTi?
Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?

The dunlops are pretty crap in my opinion.

Falken FK452 are a good price and are simply fantastic.  Since replacing the dunlops with these the overall ride has impoved, less noise and amazing grip in the wet and dry.  I don't think I've read a bad review about them and there are plenty out there.  Needless to say I agree with these reviews  :happy2:

Michelin Pilot Sport 2's or Goodyear Assymetrics from me (although thats 18's)
or you may even want to consider the Hankook Ventus K107 on the recent VWR car (runs 19's) if they are available in 17's
many on here have tried that car and have been surprised how good they are  :happy2:

I sit at the Michellin Pilot Sport II table, brilliant in the wet and dry, although I'm currently running Toyo T1r's....supposed to be as good, in the dry they are superb but in the wet you have to pay attention in the corners

For 17's i'd go for the Goodyear ASy's , awesome tyre and will improve the feel/handling of your GTI.

From what I've read I'm quite tempted by the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas. Anyone run them?

Interesting that Evo reckon the Golf has sharper turn-in bite and is faster on 17s. I did consider sticking some 18" wheels on for a while.

I had GSD3s on my old 300lb/ft Ibiza and they were the best gripping tyres it ever had...and it went through a few different sets!

My GTI has new Dunlops all round thanks to the dealer, when they're worn away I'll get Goodyears on my 17s without any hesitation.  You get what you pay for.

I'll agree with evo's view of bigger wheeled cars having less bite and acceleration, I've seen it on a few different cars when changing to bigger wheels.  The only way to counteract it is to fit lighter wheels.
