8.5in ET45 will they rub?
« on: November 28, 2010, 10:25:32 am »
Ive just got some new wheels and they were supposed to be 8in wide however they are 8.5 x 18in ET45 and I have 225/40/18's to fit.  The car is standard height at the moment but I will probably lower it 30mm at most.  Will these rub at all?

If you want the car just for the looks.........it's OK.

I use 8,5 x 18 ET 46 wheels with 225/40/18.
I'm 15mm front and 10mm rear lower than standard....and I have some small issues when fast cornering.

I think 30mm is too low...

Remember that the GTI is already 10 to 15mm lower than the other Golfs (R32 not included) and that the OEM wheels are 7,5 x 18 ET 51

I'm running 8.5x18 ET45 225/40 on GTI AP Racing springs, lower 15mm IIRC.

I occasionally get some rubbing on the inner arch screw but that will be coming out soon.

Thanks.  Yeah I know all about the standard offset and wheel specs, I just wanted to hear from someone with practical experience. When I said 30mm I was just assuming the like of Eibach springs would be 30mm lower.   Do you have any photos of the car to show how the wheels sit on the front arch. as I dont want the wheel sitting proud of the arch?

If you are just fitting 30 mil springs, with that off set and width, then you will get rubbing, but not much, 30 mil is not to low really. I have that size wheel and had to make a lot of changes to prevent rubbing, but i went a bit lower than 30 mil.  :happy2:

Cheers.  The offsets actually 42.  I just dont want the wheels to stick out past the arches.  I can handle the trim screw mod removal do if thats all thats needed I'll be happy, I just dont want to start having issue with paint from rubbing.  A 15-20mm drop would seem fine as Im looking at the VWR front spoiler as well so dont want to go to low.

That 3 mil will help, You wont be able to notice a 20 mil drop, lots of people on here have bought the 20 mil springs and have been disappointed. I think 30 should be ok unless you drive like Lewis Hamilton.

My Speedlines were ET42 on an 8J. There's no issue, other than the offside rear sticks out the most for some reason and this would be your concern once the screw mod is dealt with.

Keep it to a 225 and you'll be fine.
Sideways yo!
