petrol in a diesal

looking for a wee bit of advice   friend just put 50 petrol in a nissan 4x4  drove it for 2 mile now its stoped what you guys think   i think it will need a new engine

my mate did this on his nissan patrol..i drained the tank,cleaned all the fuel line out and also changed the fuel filter and his has been fine...some times it can burn the tip of the injectors of but in 20 years i haveonly seen this done once

I did this in a GTI Anniversary TDI  - not £50 but half a tank on top of diesel - I was on the was to cornwall so a 250mile tip, everything went fine, maybe a little more smoke occasionally.  The biggest problem you have is when you turn it off, you'll struggle to start it again - I stopped at service about 125mile in and it took an age to fire up, once it was up it was fine - I then brimmed it again with diesel to water down even more and it was fine from then on...

My mates missus did this on a Jeep Cherokee and then drove for 40 miles.

My mate drained it, changed the fuel filter and in his case the fuel pump, as it uses the diseasal as lube, and all was fine.

i was under the impression if you put petrol in a diesel it wasnt that bad unless you leave it for a while before draining, however i think if you put diesel in a petrol it cocks the engine up.`

a small amount of petrol in a diesel isn't too bad, they actually used to use a petrol diesel mix at very low temperatures to help keep the diesel viscous, think the issue here is the volume or percentage of petrol, as said above should be fine once its drained and filters changed, tell your mate to get one of those special fuel flaps installed that stops you putting petrol in a diesel!

yes the flaps  the only problem with them is you cant use a fuel can on them

ok   theres  more people put wrong fuel in than you think   not me of course

old diesel engines was fine years a go to put a bit of petrol in a diesel in the winter to stop it freezing but modern diesel engines have come along way since then

you shouldnt be able to put diesel in a petrol nowdays as the nozzles are different sizes so they dont fit - on newer cars anyway

that what the idea was the nozzles are supposed to be different but they do fit each other still

you will struggle to get a diesel nozzle in a petrol car as its bigger but its still possible the other way round!  As you say Maxitrol not advisable to put petrol in a modern diesel, I was trying to reassure the OP that its not a huge issue with the way compression engines work.
