Huston i have a problem
« on: December 02, 2010, 10:11:33 pm »
Hi all

my new downpipe and decat came today so thought i would go and fit it seeing as i couldnt get out due to the snow.

All was going fine until i got to the last bolt on the exhaust.... it sheared straight off and then to make matters worse a pipe just below the two cooling pipes that go from the engine at the back into the car snapped as it was cold and brittle. It has a one way valve connected in series and dont no what its for but have stripped the broken bits off and now just require a bit of pipe to reconnect so no problems there.

It was really the exaust as ive fit the new and done the 3 up very tight with the new gasket and hoping it will be ok with 3. whats the chances of that being enough as its the most in accessable one and will find it very hard to drill and tap for a new bolt?

Nightmare scenario mate  :sad1: Ive done this myself while changing the downpipe on an Impreza.

Look at it this way, VW made it with four studs/bolts for a reason.  It'll be a pig, it'll take a few hours to sort, but worth it in the long run for peice of mind  :happy2:

Did this on my own gti a few years ago, i did a temporary fix and coated each side of the gasket witn a specialist silicon exhaust sealant (1500 degree stuff) and it was fine until i could get the turbo off to drill and refit a stud before selling the car.
