handling
« on: December 07, 2010, 11:36:17 pm »
ive had my gti for 2 weeks now and ive noticed that the car wheelspins a bit too much .

i have a dsg gearbox and unless i pull out really slow the car will wheelspin or the traction will cut in , im starting to regret going for the dsg.

also i found the golf gti to have really bad handling. my tyres are in good condition but i do have different rims which i assume affect the handling.

is this a common thing or am i the only one

my gti also has the dsg, it takes getting used 2, but learning 2 drive with it ul b fine, also what tyres do you have coz if there cheep ones ul get wheel spin alot more than performance tyres.

but most cars with 200bhp going to front wheels will spin as standard, ul find that to pull out into traffic you dont need 2 floor it pressing it halfway should be more than enough to get you out into gaps :)

Hi,

Unless your car is mapped you shouldn't have too much wheelspin, unless its a very wet/icy road, in which case its gonna be the norm.  It sounds to me like your tracking/alignment is out, causing the issue.   Or.....your front tyres may need replacing with decent rubber.

The person I bought it from told me it was mapped but I doubt it, is there anyway to tell. I'm gonna get alignment and tracking sorted. Then I'll find out if the tyres I have are half decent (never knew there was such thing as cheap tyres) thanks for advice

Picked up my gti manual a while back and I got the same problem with mine i.e when im pulling out into a roundabout.

Dealership put some cheapo tyres on mine. Got 2 triangles up front (remoulds i think?), rear left is a Dunlop and rear right is a Cooper

Hopefully all will be well once I get my winter and summer tyres delivered soon!

Seriously you must be absolutely flooring it to get it to wheelspin or the traction on.

Are you taking the cold conditions into account i.e. ice?

I have DSG and I have absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Or go and get some decent tyres if you have cheapos on there.

Remoulds? Can you even get them in that size?

As for handling, all the motoring press and programs like top gear actually commented on the fact that probably next to the Ford Focus, the MK5 Golf (and especially the GTi) was the best handling hatch of it's day and I concur.

I only have a soot chucker but with 180+hp and 375nm of Torque, and with good rubber (Good Year F1 Asymetricals in my case), then it takes a lot for them to break traction in the wet or dry. Obviously as had been said, in these current wintery conditions with black ice and snow everywhere, any powerful non 4WD car is going to struggle no matter what quality of tyres are fitted (unless of course they are proper winter tyres).

I think the GTI handles very well... With the exceptions being, a little too much body roll and it understeers a bit too much!

Again I have no problem with DSG and traction when on sensible road surfaces, have you tried using the car in manual gear select mode and as suggested holding back from completely flooring it?  on KO3 cars torque comes in at 1750 onwards so you really dont need much throttle to get you out of a junction or on to a round about!  :happy2:  Worth checking your tyre pressures as well make sure they are correct.

Yes, get the tracking and alignment looked at,  propper tyres on and then get on a Rolling Road (preferably Dyno Dynamics) for a power run.

No problem matey  :happy2:  My Ed30 had tonnes of 'wheel tramp' when I got it, it was spinning, banging the lot ! Horrible   When I changed the rubber to Bridgestone's it immediately went away
