iPod Dock
« on: December 08, 2010, 02:43:16 pm »
Hope this is not a daft question.

I have the ipod dock in the centre armrest but do not have an iPod. I do however have an iPad and was wondering if it is possible to hook the ipad up to the dock using some sort of connector and play the tunes off it. I will obviously only ever use it whan I have a pasenger to hold the ipad for me - e.g. the wife.

Any help apreciated

Thanks

Do you know which version of the ipod connector you have in the armrest?  There are two an older version that has an ipod adapter recessed inside, and MDI type which has a proprietary plug and an ipod cable attachment?

If its the older type then I guess you could simply extend it with a female to male ipod cable, but im not sure if its ipad compatible, and it doesnt allow full integration only allows you to play playlists which are saved in the first 5 slots.

The MDI will allow full ipod integration and could also be extended using a female to male ipod cable, hope that helps.

Old style adaptor

Rich

Very helpful thanks.

I have the old version (the photos you posted confirmed that) so may have to do a bit more digging around - may even try the Apple store people but not sure that they would know. May also nip into a local car audio shop or ask VW when I am next in.

These things are never simple

For the money you could just buy the cable and try it?

I dont think it would charge the ipod as I think the system works on firewire charging which apple dropped for USB only method but it might work on the playlists.  Then again it might be just as cheap to buy an old ipod and leave it in the car!
