Standard air intake question

Im not sure wether my car is missing a blanking plate on the back of the air intake?
Obviously the air flows through the front grille into the air intake duct, but there is a section missing on the rear. Is this so air flows into the engine bay aswell as the intake manifold or is this part really missing?

thats normal.  it allows an excess of air or water to flow out.  the intake sucks the air anyway so it'll get as much as it can

There was a Mod on Vortex forum a while back to blank of the rear of the intake and cut some pieces inside to make it flow better,

It showed good results very similar to a Carbonio, My personal experiece was good with this mod as my golf ran 214bhp on the rollers with this mod and a k+n panel filter only.

Ive now modified my standard air box (blanked the rear off and fitted a piece in there for better air flow!

Im now going to replace the standard air filter but not sure which panel filter is best?

Can anyone offer any recommendations?

id save your money.  you get a very slight increase induction noise and thats about it

I used a K+N on mine as i got it for free, Seemed to do the job and seemed to make a difference.

As said above, best gains will be had by doing away with the standard panel filter altogether and fitting a decent cold air intake as the main restriction is in the airbox itself.

I have a virtually new Pipercross panel filter for sale if your interested, but personally i would save up and invest in an ITG or Forge Twintake cai. It really all depends how far your looking to go in terms of modding the car.

I had a Carbonio plus ITG panel filter in the oem engine cover box but the only gains were a tiny bit of responsiveness and more efficient air flow but not worth doing for performance increases. Good eye-candy though. I now run a Forge Twintake. ITG know what they're doing and deliver excellent results but I personally think their Maxogen intake looks homemade. Each to their own.
