Tom Tom problem
« on: December 11, 2010, 04:54:28 pm »
I have a Tom Tom Go 510 which doesn't turn on anymore....

I used it just over a week ago to drive to Stansted airport and it was fine.  I left it in the car for 4 days (when we had the really cold weather) and on my return I couldn't get it to turn on.  Thinking it just needed charging I plugged it into the cigarette lighter, the green light came on but it still wouldn't switch on for the entire journey home (3+ hours).

Then I thought it may have been because it just didn't like the cold so when I got home I brought it into the house where it has been ever since (5 days) but it still won't turn on.

When I plug it into the mains the green light comes on again to say it's charging, but when I plug it into my PC it doesn't so it seems the computer isn't recognising it as a device?

Any ideas or is it FUBAR'd?

I had a Tomtom one. It didn't hold its charge well and eventually wouldn't turn on without a power supply. Leave it charging and do the reset. See if it works.

Charged it for an hour or so the other day when I was trying to sort it out.  It's also been on charge for the last 6 hours today and still won't turn on.

Tried that.  The reset button is in a really awkward place on it but I've pushed a pen nib into it as best I can but still nothing....

That's useful to know, thanks.  I'll leave it charging overnight and see if I can get it to work tomorrow.  If not I may just give them a ring.

Have you tried:
- plugging it in
- remove sd card
- holding reset for 15 secs
- insert sd card
- hold power button for 5 secs

Taken from another website and you may have already tried it.

Well I appear to have fixed it

It turns out that all it needed was the reset button to be pressed, but the pen nib I was using wasn't the right size so I used a pin instead and hey presto :happy2:

Oh, and the reason the light didn't come on when I connected it to my computer was because it also needs to be plugged into the mains at the same time which I didn't realise :ashamed:

Thanks for the help anyway.  Glad it works now as I have more important things to be spending money on at the moment instead of a new sat nav!  It probably didn't like being left in the car at the airport with temperatures of minus whatever they were.

When I had my TomTom, I used to store a paperclip with the case!
