Modding virgin!

As the title says I'm a modding virgin and would like to pop my cherry and would like to get on the slippery slope! I have a standard dsg gti and so far have been concentrating on the aesthetics but want to move on to performance mods. So what mod do you guys think is best to start with? Any input is welcome! Thanks.

Making the biggest change to the car will be a remap.  Other mods have nice little improvements, a remap completely transforms the car for relatively little money.  Some people will say upgrade brakes, suspension etc before increasing power but I genuinely feel the car can cope with the power with ease.  Depends on your driving style i suppose, I'm certainly never hammering the brakes, just enjoy accelerating :laugh:

A simple remap will give you the most bang for your buck. It costs around £500 to stage 1 and around £3000 for the same leap to Stage 2+.

Visually, a lot of people like to colour code the side skirts and rear valance.


The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I thought that, was tempted by the Rtech map as it's only £200 at the moment but revo seems to be the most popular on here I'm guessing. I don't know how different they are?

Yeah colour coding is another change I'd like to make, will prob wait for the weather to change for the better!

Yes, if you're going to approach it from a "what's the maximum return I can get for my money?" point of view, then a remap. BUT... Your car will feel much more better balanced to drive if you enhance the suspension and brakes as well or even first.

With more power you'll find yourself wanting better braking power and handling and such mods as anti-roll bars and Quaife diff can transform the car further. You'll want to be able to transfer that power to the road without wheelspin and so a lower engine mount will help. The slippery slope is expensive as it all adds up.

if i was to start all over again the first mod i would do is a diff pure and simple the car just puts its power down better and drives and handle better  :driver:

....A diff on a front wheel drive car will help grip when one of the wheels is losing it. The result is that the car is 'pulled' instead of understeering and you can apply the acceleration earlier in a corner. That's the simple explanation but someone else can probably explain it better. It requires a professional who is familiar with gearboxes and very especially if DSG.

The lower engine mount reduces/stops the sloppiness in the transmission as power is applied. If you have the tools and know what you're doing, then you might DIY but I'd still recommend a pro. An engineer like stokeballoon or gillm could do it but I couldn't, for example.

Does anyone on here use drilled beak discs or will standard say r32 ones be fine?

Well... each to there own but this what I've done

R32 front brakes
WALK kit
Autotech Rear ARB

A few little mods like the above will help a lot when it comes around to remap time and your asking 300bhp at the front wheels.


Ive got drilled 345mm discs on mine... do they make a difference? NO idea, but they look good!  :signLOL:

[Also... a black front VW badge will give you about 8-10bhp gains]

Who makes the discs mate? Also I'm guessing you'll need at least 18s to fit them on? Im hopefully getting some 18s from greeners soon so they might have to be purchased!

I think they should fit over 17" wheels... but it might be a very very tight fit!
