:happy2: nice one, this almost happened to me, knock at door, ignored it, then bang, they kicked the door in. saw like 5 guys, shouted "OI" at them and they all ran off... into a Audi RS6 of all things :-\

....What's the betting they'd recently nicked the RS6!  :fighting:

...caught up and smashed him round the back of the head, he went down, i trip over him, belt him again and pin him down...

OK, devil's advocate time. How would you have felt if your smash around the back of the head had resulted in the death, or serious injury of the person?

I'm rather surprised by the attitudes shown here. I'm clearly in a minority here, but I don't think you should be given hero status for what you did. I'm obviously glad that no harm came to you, or indeed your victim, but really, your actions sound unnecessary.

I'm not saying we should allow ourselves to be violated by criminals, but chasing someone down the road and exacting needless violence is not right in my opinion, especially when they are running away from a confrontation.

....I can totally see your point, Andrew, and I think that many of us here are applauding Joe for making a citizen's arrest rather than solely the 'assault'. However, the sad fact is that the Police, often unfairly blamed, don't always catch the criminal in break-ins. Add to this that the courts aren't strict enough about custodial sentences and the public understandably want to see some form of 'justice' done even if it tends towards no trial.

Us lot here are also emotionally driven by, and our judgement is clouded by, our love of our cars.

I can see Andrew's point, but if Joe hadn't chased him, then Joe would now have no keys to his R32 and be looking to cancel his cards. As it is he made a citizen's arrest and no-one was unduly hurt in the process - apart from the thief's ass later in jail maybe

....Hmm, in spite of my last post (Reply #51), on the specific point I quote from your post, I'm now thinking that I personally don't think I'd be at all upset if I seriously injured someone who had entered my property uninvited with the premeditated intention of stealing from me and possibly doing me physical harm in the process. If they accidentally lost their life as a result, I can't say I'd think it was my fault.

Hmm, I really expected more from you Robin. I know we all really work hard for our possessions, but that's all they are, possessions. And allowing our judgement to be clouded, to the point where the loss of human life is negligible is abhorable in my opinion.

....I'm just being very honest about how I think I would react. I know that these are only material possessions but it's the principle of someone very intentionally violating my peace which causes me to be so 'war like'. Knowing myself, I also already know that I have a violent streak if prompted hard enough - It may not be what society judges as right but it's there and I'm not unique in this way.

I don't actually view human life as any more important than any other form of life - We are just another species. But my point is the principle of being subjected to such events which are unprovoked personal attacks rather than defending the possessions themselves.

EDIT: I'd just like to make it clear that when I say "If they accidentally lost their life as a result, I can't say I'd think it was my fault", I mean truly an accident and not a case of 'accidentally-on-purpose'. In other words I wouldn't set out to take a life but if their life was lost, so be it.

Andrew,

If a 'Scum' takes the risk to burgle/rob etc another persons property, then they 'should' accept any consequence as they put themself in that position ! (otherwise not do it).  Your attitude, right or wrong, is exactly the reason why homeowners 'can' be prosecuted for injuring a 'Scum' in their house, or for robbing their property.  This should NOT be the case and no grey are should exist in this matter.  Homeowners should be allowed to defend their own property and possessions..... Period !!

I'm sick of reading stories about a man or woman that has been prosecuted for injuring such 'Scum' for robbing their house.

I would not by the way, be happy to see someone killed, but if the 'Scum' knew the risks before entering innocent peoples houses, then they might think more than twice about doing it.
