This document is a collation of engine issues that have been seen on the newer generation Euro5 compliant 1.4TSI – Twincharger engines. Certain issues have been addressed by the manufacturer as described below.


If you see any vehicle with these issues DO NOT flash Revo software onto the ECU without the issues being rectified.

•   Misfiring when cold and vehicle is in warm up state – factory update issued
•   Misfiring due to faulty coilpacks – certain batches of coilpacks were recognised as faulty and would be replaced under warranty
•   Misfiring due to faulty plugs
•   Misfiring due to faulty injectors – there was an injector part number change early 2010 newer injectors are believed to have a more efficient spray pattern to prevent excessive depositing on the piston crown. Injectors were also changed to solve misfire issue along with a factory software update.
•   Water Pump Failures
•   Crankshaft bearing play which can lead to bore wear and piston/piston ring damage

NOTE: there have been numerous cases where completely standard vehicles have suffered from misfires and un-burnt fuel in the cylinder has caused bore-wash leading to piston/piston ring damage.

Not all vehicles suffer from these issues however it’s very important to be aware of the issues prior to flashing the vehicle so you can look out for symptoms of any potential problems. Any issue seen on a standard vehicle will be accentuated if the vehicle is run at a higher level of tune.

I think I have the misfire when cold and in the warm up state. Engine feels rough for the first 30 seconds and doesn't like to be driven, until that time has passed. Then its as smooth as a whistle

Car stripped out today in practice for my upcoming 1/4 mile virgin run. Rear ARB and uprated lower engine bush fitted. Popped it on the weighbridge and with the TD Pro 1.2,s, Milltek and the strip its now 80kg,s lighter:D

Just for Hurdy.
spare wheel 14kg
rear seat 19kg
other bits from boot area 13.1kg
Total 46.1kgs

liking it Ry.  FWIW when i removed mine it was 49kg.  You should get a good time, you using the paradas or track tyres also which strip you using?  I think the Polos pretty light as well.

Also you'll definitely be the fastest Polo GTI on the 1/4 mile leaderboard....the only Polo GTI, but still the fastest :grin:.  Most recent time was a stripped stage 2 which managed a 13.547@104.7mph at Crail on the weekend just gone, and thast with road tyres

what about some more weight loss options?

removing the sound deading around the supercharger.  Apparently 2.5kg

I used this weighbridge when it was totally standard and it read 1220kg. Weighed today 1140kg. I did pop it on another one when standard and it said 1190kg so it could be 1110kg?. All i know is iv,e lost 80kg :happy2:. Weighbridge lottery

Fingers crossed for the 1/4 mile runs and some good times :jumping:

Official figure for a 3dr with a 90% tank of fuel is supposed to be 1192kg, so the other weighbridge may have been more accurate - still 80kg off at under 1150kg is going to make a pretty nifty motor. :jumpmove:
