VW Boot Badge - Wrapping Guide?
« on: December 12, 2010, 07:45:05 pm »
Going to have a brave attempt at wrapping the rear boot badge to match the front black VW badge I've got. I also want to wrap the black plastic section that sits behind the badge in Steel Grey to match the rest of the car. Wraps all purchased and sitting ready which is cool

Do we have a guide anywhere that documents this step by step please, one that includes taking the boot mechanism off too as I assume it's the easiest approach to doing this?

I can't imagine it being very easy without taking removing it?
My only concern is that the boot mechanism won't function as well once I've re-fitted it  :ashamed: ...

Thanks,
Pete.

boot function should not be any different once refitted as you are not really adding anything that would alter the mechanics of it.

To remove the badge, take out 2 screws that are on the inside of the boot handles. Take off the 2 plastic light covers, then pull....pull.....and pull, until all the clips are free and the plastic cover is completely off. then remove the 3 screw/washers for the rear wiper, and that will allow you to get to the third screw on the rear of the badge. Then simply remove the 3 screws on the badge, and unplug the wiring. Should be all set then.

For the wrapping ,just make sure you have cleaned the badge. I peel one corner and then with a credit card push it along to make sure that there are no air bubbles, when at the sides put a hairdryer on it for about 15 seconds, and then stretch around the sides, or just cut it flush with the sides as the badge will go over the sides anyway.
Hope that helps.

You make it sound so easy Al  :happy2:

Thank you kindly. These looks like good step by step instructions so I'll attempt it soon.
TBH I was going to give it a go without removing the lock mechanism, wrapping it bit by bit

It really is quite easy, you could probably do a good job with it still on the car, Think there are some picture tips on here somehwere showing you how it is done if you do struggle at any point.

On the boot badge can the chrome effect "VW" come away from the mechanism?? I ask this because taking a close look I found a small slot at the bottom of the badge/handle and really want to attack it with a flat screwdriver or two.  Ive painted the front VW in Vauxhall metallic black and Im going to do the same with the rear. Not too keen on removing the hatch lining :happy2:

As long as it one of the later 2 piece badge then yes they come away quite easily, my old one was so loose that if I closed the boot too hard it would come off, flat screwdriver or dash trim kit should get it free with ease.

Yes it is in 2 parts. Ive got the chrome cover rubbed down with a bit of P1000 and its busy drying in the shed. Looks better than carbon vinyl IMO
