Fitted a new battery and it worked a treat until...

this cold weather hit and i came to it this morning and it was dead.

So it's a new battery so i'm guessing it's not that but could the cold really of killed it off???

Any help welcome.... please!!!

Cold weather , does it kill batterys fact or  fiction  , I was in Halfords and the manager was telling a customer sorry we have almost sold out its the cold weather sir.I would take a guess it does

A weak battery or one thats nearing the end of its life is far more likley to fail during cold weather. We get people come in asking to check cars they have fitted 3 new batteries on within a week, and the fault has been alternator related all along.

Cheers boys - no it's not the 510 unfortunately!! I wish it was because of that reason but the Christmas budget just won't let me stretch to
one of those just now!

It's a 2005 but the battery was replaced 3 weeks ago...

Went to the VW garage (via a jump start) and they want it in over night to do a battery check. I dont have the time as i've got
to head up North on Wednesday so i might just take care of it whilst im there!!

Just came back from Texas this week too and it was in the low 80's there in December!!! Why couldn't i of caught Heathrow's closure
a day earlier!!!

WEll car batteries are based on a chemical reaction to store power, over time the chemical reaction weakens and the potential between the terminals is reduced, and if people can remember back to chemistry lessons at school the temperature of a reaction will affect the rate and strength of a reaction by reducing the amount of energy in the system.  So the cold can reduce the voltage (potential difference) of the battery and cause it not to have enough ommpphh to start the car up.

Its also why it is recommended that you turn off as many systems as possible when starting your car in extreme cold so that other system aren't drawing current from the battery.  Also electrical systems like heated seats rear screen heater heated mirrors will draw current from the alternator once the car is started which will reduce the current available for charging the battery.
