RNS 510 off the road?
« on: December 19, 2010, 12:34:10 pm »
Hi, I have been having a look around the VW sites and have not come up with any answers to this?.

I have done a bit of searching threw this site and have kinda answerd one part of my question but looking for a bit more.

I have got a RNS 510 in my caddy van it has been working fine intill a month or so ago
When i put the sat nav on it keeps thinking its in germany. After about 15 - 60mins of driving it finds it way but will be completley off the track?
The antena is new and the sat nav has full signal 90% of the time?
I cant connect it to vag com as the cam bus is incorrect so i had to wire a inline switch in.

like i said above it was working ok but now it dose not?

I dont know what firmware or cambus im am running how do i find out?

Any help please lads

Thanks mart

It would help if you know what firmware it was running on and what version of the unit it is.

Youll need VCDS for this. Maybe look inthe VCDS user section and find someone near you to scan it for you.

Do you know if the secret menu is enabled? This tells you the version and what firmware your running.

Thats the 2nd problem. As i have wired an inline swith to stop battrey drain insted of up grading the cambus the radio can't be viewed in vagcom.
it just comes up that there is no radio.

The menu is not turned on as well.

If i find out if its an A, B or C is it possible to upgrade the f/w to over come this.

And do i have to install the maps after F/W update
Also is it posible to put any maps on to any F/W or do only certen maps go with certen F/W?

Sorry about all the question
thanks mart

You say you have 'full signal 90% of the time'

How many satelites is this? press map button twice to see how many satelites you have.

Where is the gps antenna? Any chance its moved from its original position thus giving you a poor signal and it taking longer to 'lock on'.

About 9 out of 10 /11.
But just went to use it today and never made it above 6? could be down to all the snow and bad weather up in the sky?

the antenna is ontop the dash near the passenger side door pillar close to the window.

Thanks Mart

Im no meteorologist so I could'nt say for sure!  :rolleye:

Id try and get another antenna, there only cheap and try that first. If not go down the update the firmware route.

You can run a newer version modified firmware that won't give you battery drain but without knowing what f/w your on now its hard to tell if it would make any difference.

But seeing as you have the battery drain issue (hence the inline switch) you re probably running a fairly new f/w anyway??

right i just had a little play and put the antenna in the center of the windscreen and it come up my the right location straight away.
turned the nav off (inline switch) back on and it was in Germany. 1st time it found its location straight away for a month Fluke you think? but it comes up that its got satilites all the time even when its in germany.
I have got a new antenna on its way via ebay so not shore when it is going to be hear.
im thinking that its got to be the antenna as it work fine with no loss of location when i 1st fitted the nav?

Also took the nav out and had a look at the lables on the out side how do i know what version nav i have?.

Thanks mart

Im no expert mate but maybe the inline switch has something to do with it.

I think the RNS remembers were you are when you stop the car and turn the ignition off so maybe you killing the power to it with the switch messes this process up?? Like I said Im no expert just thinking out loud really.

You'll have a big six digit number followed by a letter on the big sticker ontop of the unit ie mine is 1T0 035 680 C

The C being the version number although your unit could be and upraded A or B unit depending on the f/w installed.

Lee.
