need more doors
« on: December 21, 2010, 09:57:29 am »
I have to say I love my GTI,  :driver: it really meets my needs for practicality, speed, and reasonable upkeep costs  :drinking:...I do however crave another 2 doors. I have a young daughter (10) and transporting her and her friends around is becoming a bit of a bind, they all want to go in the back leaving the passenger seat empty...as a result they sit in the back and the front passenger door cannot easily be closed.

I have thought about trading-in and getting another GTI/Edition 30, but the costs to change kind of far outweigh the benefits of the additional doors. I can't really justify it on other grounds as my GTI is fully loaded, and I mean FULLY loaded, so I would most likely miss out of so many of the toys, winter, lux, 10 speakers, cruise, xenons, sunroof, mfd2, leather (and of course heat), parking sensors.

Bit of a random post really lol...

I guess if someone with a 5 door desperately wanted a 3 door I would consider a swap with some cash other than that I think I will just have to keep her and treat her nicely until it becomes more economic to trade in....for what though...that, is the question. I reckon I will have to keep her another couple of years, meaning that I will move her on around the 70k mark (she is at 48k just now).

People dont really do swaps do they?

Yes its a DSG, full main dealer history apart from one VW specialist service.

However at 63k, and the age of your car is to be honest pushing it for me, though let me think about it some more.

Ideally I think I would swap over for an ed30/ at a push an R32 with 4 doors but its unlikely that anyone would want to "downgrade" to a GTI, so therefore were I able to have the luxury of being picky the GTI would have to probably have similar mileage/ year/ slightly newer to myself at least. Hope this makes sense lol....

*cough* you'd need to get that alternator sorted first though

I've thought about this a lot too. I have a 5 door, and a little boy who will be 2 in March. In reality the Golf is pushing it with just one child, yet alone two or more. In a few years when we have another baby, holidays in the UK, shopping trips etc. are going to be very difficult with the car we have. I've looked at estate cars but none have really excited me. I really like the Passat CC but I think at 30 I'm a bit too young to drive one, plus they're all diesels on the secondhand market. I'd take a 335i/d Touring but they're all a bit pricey!

.
I was all set to order a 3-door as I previously had a 2-door BMW but my daughter, then 14yo, suggested that 5-door would be more sensible/practical - She's the lady-of-the-house as I'm divorced.

The 5-door makes a huge difference to the ease of loading/unloading, be it a car full of teenage girls, 450w stage monitors plus music gear, or even a section of 6ft fence!

To anyone who thinks that the Golf is too small for 2 parents plus 3 kids, I think you'd be surprised how you can manage. Most parents of new kids buy and carry far too much around with them. New mothers generally grossly overreact, but I guess it's in the female genes - Try getting an average female to pack and travel light!

Btw, 63k miles on an 05-plate is nothing! Volkswagens are German remember!

....About 300 miles less than 90,000. My mileage has substantially reduced this last 12 months though. Sometimes she's in her batcave for 10 days and then suddenly it's 400 miles in one day. I drive her much less in the winter. Nearly all my miles are for pleasure rather than necessity.

....Quite a few families have a wifey's car which caters for the kids etc etc, but you need the parking/garage space plus being prepared to spend more money on automobiles. Depends on your family's income or financial circumstances.

When I was married we had my BMW straight-six :notworthy: and a Fiat Cinquecento.

haha alternator all sorted and new battery - i hear what your saying, but obviously one of us has to go slightly up/down in spec etc if doing a swap.

I was just throwing it out there - nothing too serious unless your interested bud

Exactly - my last car was an Audi A4 and racked up 140,000 on the bad boy without it skipping a beat.
