A somewhat mixed day at Awesome...

Been down to Awesome today for WALK and ECS dogbone mount insert to be fitted to eliminate wheel hop after Revo Stg 1. Job done feels much better under hard acceleration.

However, also went for RR session to finetune settings as have been runnibg 6/5/5 since got Revo fitted and as you have all said should be a leaner AFR of F9 on Stg 1.

Bad news is the car was misfiring on cylinders 2 and 3 after about 6K and the power and torque would just tail off.

The power is there as after 3 runs avg bhp at flywheel was 303.85 and avg torque 341.05 lb/ft but when they tried to up the F from 5 to 9 would not have it but did not go into limp mode at all.

Team there are a bit stumped and will have to ring Revo next Tue as they checked plugs and coil packs and made no difference. John said might be "valve springs" (sounds expensive) as looks like "a mechanical misfire"

Anyone got any ideas at all?

I know the S3 have a TSB on their valve springs which must be what Awesome has refered to. Let us know what you find out mate  :sad1:

ED30 manual, 57 plate 5dr black.

Only perf mod before today was Revo Stg1 running 6/5/5, Awesome now think the fuelling may have been pegged back to 5 because of this problem they have discovered. So was yours the Yellow Audi?

Mine was the white S3 :smiley:

As Danish has said there is an issue with around 08 S3's having the wrong valve springs fitted which can cause a misfire when mapped, mine did it infact when I first had stg 1 and we had to peg back the setting B & T but not F, that was always left at F9. Not sure if this issue affects the Ed30 also??

Mine stopped doing it when I fitted the downpipe, I run B8 T5 F6 IIRC on stg 2+.

The figures you quote are pretty much spot-on for a stg 1 ED30 though, are they with the mis-fire present or with the reserved settings, if so they are pretty good

mmmm not quite sure what settings were when these figures were taken, would have to scan graph. i have three runs colour coded black, red, blue but there are a pair (2 lots of three runs) so not sure which is which.

Anyway, if the valve springs need to be changed what are we looking at circa $$

I'd be suprised if the valve springs need changing mate, there are loads of people on here running Revo and other maps on the Ed30 with no issues. i ran one myself stg1&2 with no issues at all. Was the car producing any fault codes at all along with the misfires?? I'm sure they'll sort it when they have chatted to Revo

I was only there 20 mins mate, booking in for a service, the car didn't go in the workshop and to be honest calling it white is a bit cheeky, more of a dirty muddy grey/brown colour at the minute

Sounds very much like fuel cut, I assume that they logged the rail pressure?

Were there any missfires detected through diagnostics?

Sounds identical to an Issue we had recently with a leon K1, would flatten off at 4krpm and occasionally missfire, setting changes helped when we removed some boost from the map (wasnt revo, one of our own codes) and leaned out the AFR but came back in only 5th gear, we looked into the valve bounce issue but weren't convinced this was the cause so as a test we logged rail pressures with high boost settings and as we richened AFR's the rail pressure would max out and pull ignition timing. Fitted a HPFP internals kit as a test and problem went away, so much so that we could increase timing and boost midrange and picked up an extra 12hp and 21 ft/lb. Requested rail pressures were increased to approx 128 bar.

 Car returned 5 weeks later for new plugs and coilpacks as we discovered a missfire on cyl3 but its been perfect since. Find a friendly forum member with vagcom thats local to you and get logging, bet the rai. Pressure is struggling :happy2:

Im answering calls all weekend (drew the short straw so im working) incase you need any help.

Dave, could a worn pump follower cause the fuel pump not to be able to produce the required fuel presure?

Thats one possibility but so can a faulty MAF, faulty MAP and any other number of faults cause similar symptoms.

no, no fault codes were detected so fuel pump they presume is ok, all it would tell them was that there was misfire on 2 and 3. Mmm not sure whether to feel positive or worried as sounds like could be nothing major on other hand...

Thanks for your input anyway chaps (Dave might give you a buzz over weekend are you just on PDT main switchboard number - if not can you PM your work mobile?)

Presuming theres no fuel cuts due to having no fault codes isn't the most effective way of fault finding. You need to log the pump pressures and see if theres any pressure drops. Fuel pressure drop can cause a missfire, as well as missfire detection fault codes.

I wouldn't expect a fault code to be logged if you had hit the fuel cut or not able to hold sufficiant rail pressure.....

can't be fuel cut surely...he's going from F5 to F9 and that's causing the missfire!!!
