Chrirping noise when starting?
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:57:20 am »
Anyone get a strange noise when starting the car - like a sqeak/chirping noise?

I've done some looking and it sounds like it could be the cambelt tensioner, thing is I've had the cambelt and waterpump changed a few thousand miles ago. It's been making the noise before and after the change but, I didn't really take notice to it until a mate pointed it out because his doesn't make that noise.

Anyone got any suggestions what to do?

Cheers

Perhaps the tensioner wasnt replaced on cambelt replacement?

I had the same noise as you describe, and it turned out to be the cam belt tensioner.

Had it replaced under warranty and noise was gone.

Possibly, saying that i got a reputable indy to do it and i supplied them a full genuine VW cambelt kit. I might give them a phone and see what they say.  Presumably they will charge me to fix it as well when it should have been in the first place :sad1:

Does anyknow know how much it will cost to sort ?

Cheers

If it is that, then you'll need a new cambelt kit as once the belt is slackend off it shouldnt be re-used.
Are you sure it wasnt purchased when you had it done before? The genuine parts carry warranty as well, regardless of where the part is fit

I have had the 'cold squeel' on mine for ages when on idle first thing in the morning (given up telling VW about it TBH). However, I then developed a chirp when starting the car up (every time, not just when cold). Car went in the other week and VW told me it was the starter motor and they had to order some special grease to sort it (how true that is I don't know  ).
Anyway, it's mint now and starts as smooth as new. So they must of done something right..

There are quite a few Mk4 Golf's i know that make a chirp / squeel type noise when starting which is the starter motor. The chirping from the tensioner is usually continuous after starting and sounds like a squeeky belt and usually goes on for a while until things warm up a little.

This is exactly what I get, I get it when i first start the car but, when its warm and i start it, there is no noise! Sorry to be a pest but, do you know how much it costs to sort? Do you have a reciept for it with details of what was done/used?

Cheers!

Had my tensioner (and belt hopefully) replaced under warranty last week too.

When should the cambelt be changed, or have I confused this with the aux belt?

My mates MKIV Golf has been doing this for well over a year now without any issue, just a quirky noise frmo the starter motor when starting the car, but always starts each time, his car is just a cheap runabout so he doesnt really care to look in to it so for a resolution, i dont know, nor do i know if its doing more harm than good by carrying on as it is.

Sounds like a deranged Cockrel or something is the only way i can describe it
