Major Service £££
« on: January 07, 2011, 02:26:57 pm »
I have to get the major (and my first) service done now, my GTI is 4 years old and has 55k so it is the major service. I have been going to a friend/mechanic who is the senior tech in a local Audi garage and he does work on my cars on the side for slightly cheaper than normal.

When he told me how much this service is going to cost me I was a little surprised at how much it comes to. £155 for standard service (brake oil, fuel filter etc..) + £325 for timing belt and water pump. Thats £480, does that sound right considering he is doing me a favour?

I am going to call me local stealer now and see what they quote me, I am always dubious about going to new mechanics as I like to know who is doing the work so that I can trust the job is done to the highest standard.

Cheers Jim

Jeeezus! I just spoke to my local VW garage and they want £325 for the long life service oil, pollen, screen wash etc and £655 for a timing belt and waterpump change. A grand total of £980. And to think i was being ripped off by my own mechanic!

I too would be intrested to know what you find as come March I will be due an MOT, Full (40K) Service, brake fluid change as well as the recommended CAM belt (plus water pump).

Last time I was in my local stealer I asked for a quote and I got the following:

Long life Service (40K) + brake fluid = £400

CAM belt + water pump - they have the deal where it's £299 for a CAM belt but at my local stealer they have a footnote where it states that this excludes the 2.0 TFSI as apparently there's more work involved so they quoted £540 I think in the end.

Now I know I've read that people have managed to get replacement CAM belt quotes for £399 at stealers (the £299 standard deal plus £99 to change the waterpump) so I'm sure with a bit of haggling I could have knocked them down but still £400 is a lot of money. I'm pretty sure I'll be taking mine to an inde, I've never swapped from main dealer so early (based on a cars age) before.

The last time I had VW do a CAM belt was on my old MKIV 1.8T. When they changed the waterpump they charged me for the part only as they said it took minutes, based on the fact they stripped the parts down to replace the belt so I have no idea where dealers are getting £99 from these days.

Does this mechanic provide a stamp in the book if he's doing it on the side?

They charge £99 for the waterpump because the part is around £30, then you need to do coolant as it will be all over the floor once the pump is removed, then the labour to do it.

Does this mechanic provide a stamp in the book if he's doing it on the side?

Is that because the car is 4 years old as I get mixed messages reading some peoples posts where they say it is a timing belt change @ 40k and others say 60k. I am going by the people that say 4 years as i bought the car at 50k and it had not been done.

My mechanic does stamp the book but not with the Audi stamp but with another stamp which is the old garages name. He uses all the same equipment and he is a senior bod but at the end of the day i would rather have someone i know and trust doing it and have a cheap stamp mark, than pay the extra £500 just for the stamp and risk having some burk messing me around.

The water pump does cost £30 and my mechanic doesnt put any mark up on the parts so its pretty reasonable.

I have also just been told it is £48 for a OEM replacement fog light as mine is cracked, anyone know where i can get a better price with free delivery?

I red the VW site a lot, they offer a price match within a 5 mile radius and have this -

"Change cambelt including water pump replaced
£399

All prices include parts, oil, labour and VAT (20%) costs"

So sureley get your mate who works in a garage to print a letter head paper saying he will do it for £250 for e.g then take that in?

Did the same with just under 50k on the clock, but had them do a pump and belt change as part of the deal... glad I did now

Yes my car will be 4 years old hence it needs everything - I have heard that Audi specify longer intervals for the CAM even though the engines are the same, but not checked this for sure. I'd rather be safe than sorry though and get it done but I can't afford the kind of money VW want, especially as I know when  Igo to pick it up they'll have fwked something up

I have this offer myself, basically it covers a minor service and the following year a major service, not cambelt im afraid, that really would be a good deal :happy2:

The VW garage in Guildford (Colbournes) or as I shall now pronounce it Guildfraud lol. I think they offer me a 10 or 20% discount for life if I go with them but I will be going with my old mechanic until they start offering real prices.

I would love to price match as mentioned above but they are not within a 5mile radius.
