Drain holes in bottom of tailgtate?

Hi guys,

Not posted on here for a while but keep lurking periodically  

I noticed that at the bottom (underneath) of the tailgate there is just one drainhole at the drivers side. I thought it unusual just to have one drain hole at one side - if the car was parked on a slight angle then potentially you could have a puddle between the inner / outer skins.

I initially thought that mine was faulty but I noticed this afternoon that my father in law's Ed30 is exactly the same.
I am assuming that this is a general draain hole for the whole tailgate? I had a short thought that perhaps it could be a dedicated drain for the tailgate handle mechanism with a tube conneting the two.

Still seems odd though to only have one drain hole at one side?

Any ideas folks?

When I fitted my reverse camera I had to remove the blanking plug in the bottom centre of the tailgate to mount the drain tube from the badge/camera, if you look you will see the dimples where the plugs are painted over. Might be easier to remove the inner tailgate panel so you can have a better look without damaging the paint.

God knows why they did it but they put a little plastic plug in and spray over it when they paint it, my edition 30 was the same and as above when we put the RVC in we just popped the plugs out from the inside out, it left quite a clean hole too

Thanks for the reply guys. Do you suggest that there gromets are removed then? I assume that if I remove the plugs the pre-drilled holes should be painted / rust proofed? I'm surprised that tailgates aren't holding plenty of moisture between the skins causing corrosion issues.

I just wondered if they are left close for a good reason

When i went in my boot it was bone dry, im not sure any water can get in unless you put the Reveres camera in, if you take the plugs out there appears to be paint there, but to be sure i added more to mine, i also guess it depends what happens when you crack the paint seal.

Hmm, perhaps best left alone then. Might end up creating a problem if i'm not careful!

The only problem ive seen with mk5 boots is rust on the inside of the boot where the badge/handle is fitted.

Id hazzard a guess its where people dont clean there and let all the crap sit in there!
