Help me with a budget!
« on: January 10, 2011, 07:50:44 pm »
Hi guys, I'm new here as my post count states! My name is jack and I'm a service advisor at listers Volkswagen in Worcester,I'm currently driving a polo G40 that's running 171bhp but it's a little to harsh and lethal as a daily driver,
Im currently stuck between a BMW E46 M3 or an edition30 gti, I'd be greatfull if someone could give me any pointers if they have had any experience with both cars? Now my question is what budget should I give? I gather leather seats are a NO in the ed30? I'd like a candy White one or a black one, but what sort of price should I be looking at? I'd want a nice decent one, how do people find the DSG? I haven't driven a ed30 with dsg but I'm not a massive lover of it to be honest! But I only really drive passats, polo, touraeg etc with dsg so I have no experience with it on the ed30
I'd be greatfull for any help given
Cheers
Jack

Hi Jack!  :happy2:

There's a few guys on here that have had both cars but you need to consider running costs will be significantly higher for the BMW. Price wise ED30's start at around 11k but obviously the more you pay the newer/better spec you will get. DSG cars to seem to fetch more money and be a bit more sought after than the manual, although I wouldn't write the manual off!  I've had both a manual and DSG and prefer the DSG for around town (jams especially) but manual for spirited/track driving.

You will not get full leather in the ED30 unless its been retro fitted, part leather and Interlagos cloth as standard.

When I was looking into Mk5's looked at a few standard GTI's and ED30's. Pricewise standard was between 9-12k with the ED30's starting about 14-14.5k both with top specs leathers in the GTI, RNS 510, 18 wheels, lux/winter pack etc...

My insurance was high too as I hadn't really driven in years even now it's high.... But 4k wouldn't even entertain it...

Don't know it that helps!

A lot of places either won't touch you on a quick RWD or will load up the premium to really put you off, as so many ended up in hedges during the bad weather last year. I suppose it's down to a lot of people these days never having been near a RWD car, so not possessing the skills to drive them properly?

In terms of what car to have, well they're a bit chalk and cheese for sure. RWD vs FWD, big-6 N/A vs turbo-4.

The Golf is ultimately easier to live with day in, day out and easier for a novice to drive quickly, however the M3 is far more rewarding and the true driver's car.
Sideways yo!

Well my mind is made up.................edition30 it is! :jumpmove: I thought I'd like something more "new" something that is tuneable, and I have a knowledge of, with the price of fuel on the way up and up like a NASA rocket I think buying a 3.2L wouldn't be a wise choice, edition30 golfs on YouTube seem to be giving The M3 a beating, cost to run etc will also be cheaper, parts will be cheaper, I'll get a M3 when I hit my midlife crisis  :signLOL:

How come your insurance is so high? have you been robbing banks and crashing when you getaway?
If you are planning on modding then I would recommend Greenlight or Adrian Flux as they do a lot of good deals, and only want to charge me £12  a year more than my standard price more when I get my stage 1 map done.
