Xenon Headlights and oncoming traffic....
« on: January 10, 2011, 09:38:49 pm »
Apologies if this isn't in the right place, or has been covered before... (I did a brief search...)
Would appreciate any comments...
Got factory-fit Xenon's on my '06 GTI and over the course of this winter, when driving at night... I've noticed that more and more drivers coming toward me are flashing their lights at me... which I can only assume is down to the Xenon's....

I know they're not the dullest lights in the world, I've been dazzled by plenty of xenon-equipped cars myself... but I'm getting a bit pee'd off by all the flashing of headlights coming toward me and am just wondering if it's something specific to me or whether it's the 'norm'?

Any advice greatfully received!!

Sounds like there may be need for adjustment of your Xenon's.

could be a faulty levelling sensor or bad alignment mate.   id start by getting the alignment checked at any mot place etc.

Sometimes I get flashed by inconsiderate oncomers. I quickly switch on the main beam to educate them.

I would say the problem is more the winter weather, I know i was having to drive round with no washers available because of the really low temps. And not only was the visiblility dangerously bad, but all xenon's were blinding me because of the film of sh*t on the window. I wasn't daft enough though to think it was there lights rather than my screen.  :happy2:

Sounds like alignment, but the Golf xenons are the best lights I have ever had on a car - they are incredibly powerful. My wife has an E46 BMW and in comparison the lights on it are a disgrace.....

They are bloody good lights...  the contrast against the 'normal' lights on our Jetta (and my previous GT Sport) is literally like night and day!

If it's not the adjustment of your Xenons... you aren't driving with your front fogs on are you??

Dave

(flasher of people who drive with sidelights and foglights on! )

definitely don't drive with front fogs on....  unless it's Proper foggy... or someone in front has fog lights on when I can see past them for miles!  :fighting:

Ditto.

Agree about the headlights being good, too, but not sure they're the best ones I've owned. I don't think the main beam is as good as the dipped in that it only seems to illuminate wider across the road rather than further down it. My old Clio's xenons had a comparable dipped beam, but the main threw a lot more light down the road. Both a thousand times better than the missus' A3, though. That has candles at the front in comparison!

The R32 Xenons don't have a main and dipped beam there is just a shutter that moves plus an additional halogen bulb that lights.
