Is this the end of winter tyre season
« on: January 12, 2011, 12:58:41 pm »
Hi all.  I put wintrac extremes  on Early December, would you say it's safe to go back
to the originals now or wait till after jan /feb. Feed back from
you all who are running winter tyres is very much appreciated,   I find them to be very noisy now.  If januray 2010 is anything to go by then they be staying on a bit longer.

On the continent in countries where it's a legal requirement to run winter tyres, they mainly keep them on until early March.

forget about snow and ice.....for now. these tyres will work a lot better than normal tyres when the temp is consistantly under 6 degrees. When it starts getting warmer than that, get them swapped! ;)

It's 12c at the moment where I'm at ,  But who's knows how long it will last ,
Cost another 40 quid just to have them replaced because I've only got one set of alloys.

Leave them on longer, last year it snowed the equivalent of last week, plus as above its all about the temp and winter tyres work better in the wet conditions we have at the moment, ps where are you that its 12C

Was 7 degrees here this morning on my way to work which is still in winter tyre territory. I wouldnt be in such a hurry to remove them yet, as said above, this time last year we had a lot of the white stuff, so might still get more yet. I'd wait a while yet - like Feb / March time. That said, what kind of mileage do you do? I assume if the temps are on the edge of what they like then they might wear quicker?

From what I read about winter tyres, they are as good as summer tyres up to 10oC and better below 7oC.

I work shifts and so 4 out of 6 of my travelling times to/from work are either 6am or 9pm and it will be well below 7oC at those times for a while yet. Even people who work 9-5 will still be travelling home in the darker cooler period. Mine will most likely stay on until we get a spell of consistent weather where 6am/9pm is over 6oC - so that will be around June then :signLOL:

Seriously though I was considering Mid March as the swap over time. :happy2:
Golf R gone.

I plan to take mine off towards the end of March/early April.

We've had snow very early this year, so I wouldn't count your chickens that that'll be it!
