I've got my car back...

Had to pay £193.88 in total, £54.85 MOT, £130 DSG service, so I had to pay about £9 for the 2 bolts and 2 spacers.

They said VW UK didn't recognise the bulletin and car is out of warranty so that's why I had to pay for the parts, got the labour free of charge as goodwill.

Looking at the invoice, part numbers are identical to the ones above, prices are the same too.

Hope this helps.  :happy2:

Did it fix the graunching noise from the steering rack? Or, have I missed the point?

This fix as I understand things (and is why I bought the components) is meant to be a solution to the very slight subframe movement relative to the monocoque which manifests as a knock heard in the cabin. The graunching noise, as I understand things is normally rack or top mount related.

I have yet to find out if it has totally solved the knocking noise. Only driven for a short while today and all seemed ok but will have to drive it more to see if it has been solved for definite.

I've previously had top mount and road springs changed, all suspension including cv joint etc checked a number of times with no probs found at all. These things didn't solve the issue so be interesting to see if replacing the bolts/spacers works.

i thought there was a steering related recall on the mk5 gti's, something to do with knocking, but maybe im talking sh*te!  :rolleye:

I've heard this too, never been able to work out if this was official or not though. Anyone confirm?

VW replaced the steering racks on the affected cars...

Under warranty?

As Nick says, does this only apply if the vehicle is under the VW used car warranty?

Ta  :happy2:

So far, so good.  :happy2:

Well it's been over a week or so, thrown the car round a few corners left and right etc to test, haven't heard the knocking.  :driver:

I wonder if it really has been solved by something so simple.  :pomppomp:

Well worth giving a go if you're considering it, parts cost under a tenner.

Decent feedback, thanks Mandy.

Who fitted the parts out of interest?
I was thinking of taking it to my local dealer and saying "I have that steering problem, can you please address it", but, can I do it confidently or was the recall stuff not applicable to all Mk5 GTI's?

If I'm going to do it, I want to do it confidently with the right info  :happy2:

Maybe I missed it, but did you not replace the Subframe Spacer Plates Steve?

I watched the video of the noise on the ECS site, Do you guys only get it when going straight or is it just turning  corners?
I get the grinding noise when turning corners at low speed, but have been told that the cause is the steering column grinding due to the car being lowered.
Think I may try this anyway though.

I believe that we may be mixing two issues here.

1) There is the graunching sound that some of us occasionally hear on full lock and at slow speed. As far as I know this was never part of a recall, it was deemed as a "convienience issue" (whatever that is, and VW did not feel the need to replace them out. However, I do know on here some people successfully got their steering racks replaced under warranty to fix the noise. There is no loss of function, it is I believe just a pain in the bottom.

2) I dont think this is what Mandy (OP) originally describes, and Mandy talks of driving at speed. I have never heard this knocking/ popping/clicking sound.

Can we be clear which "condition" we are talking about please, if these parts fix the inconvienience of the "convienience issue" then its certainly worth a punt for those of us who occasionally hear this graunching at very slow speeds.
