Climatronic Control Panel
« on: January 13, 2011, 01:40:01 pm »
Guys, like a complete idiot, when I removed my RNS-510 the othe day it slipped from my hands, and scratched the front face of my climate control panel (see image below). The area round the 2 seat heating logos is damaged as well as marks on the upper 2 air flow buttons.

I've tried to touch it up with some black paint, but it's bothering me now as it no longer looks 100%. I don't really want to go to the expense of replacing the whole unit (at around £80 on ebay), so was wondering if anyone knew of the front face was detachable from the rest of the unit for swapping ?

Are these panels even available from VW or is it a complete new unit ?

Thanks

Andrew

Not another one damaged!!

Is that the new one you got to replace the other scratched one?

Iv got an old one upstairs, Ill check it out to see if the front comes off  :happy2:

Edit: Iv just looked at one Iv got lying around and it looks to me as if you can seperate the front and back parts. The fronts held on with 4 torx screws (maybe T10) although this is a climate panel not climatronic.

Hope this helps Andrew?

Where will you get just the front part from without getting a whole unit? I doubt the front is a seperate part number to the back?

Ha your memory is too bloody good for your own good Lee  :signLOL:

Nah, last time it was a very small mark that 80% came out with careful polishing and use of trim restorer - still on the 1st one  :happy2:. This time, I meant to take out the climate panel to protect it (it's only 4 extra screws after all) and in my hast just forgot, and when I turned the unit over to unlpug the connectors, it slipped onto the climate panel (again !)

I was thinking if the part is removable, getting an older but cleaner one off ebay. Mine is the slightly newer version with the added DUAL button with the earlier ones didn't have. However, if it's just an outer piece that comes off (which is the same no matter what revision of panel it is), then I'll buy a cheap 1st revision one and strip it down. Just didn't know if the part was "removable" from the rest of the panel ?

Thanks for reminding me anyway Lee of how ham fisted I am

Well that's made me feel a whole lot better that I'm not the only muppet  :signLOL:

Eddie, what's involved with the MK6 unit upgrade. I'm sure it's a lot more than just the climate panel itself? Mines only a 2005 model so would I have loads of parts to change?

Nah rich, only joking. Will be sticking with the MK5 unit. I actually think its easier with the larger buttons.

I'm following this because I did the same thing ages ago when I installed my RNS. It's not too bad, it's just on the upper plastic bit surrounding the two little LCDs, and I don't like the newer units with the "DUAL" and "AC" buttons... which is all I can get from the dealer. Didn't think of eBay though.

Mk6 panel looks good but it requires upgrading of the CAN on older vehicles and significant reworking of the front fascia I'd have thought?
