Wrong Oil?
« on: March 25, 2011, 09:34:45 am »
Just had my car serviced by VW (04 Golf 1.4 FSI), it's on T&D instead of longlife but they used Magnatec 15W40. I thought it was supposed to be 5W30 oil? Have they put in the wrong stuff?

I don't think it matters that much. But there are a few people that feel it has to be right or it will blow up. The engine will run fine with no problems. One of the main reasons there are different oil grades are for different weather climates. So the engine can and is supposed to run with different oil grades. I wouldn't worry about it. But that's just my opinion.

VOLKSWAGEN

Model

Golf 1.4 16V FSI (QG0/2 - 66kW)

Year

2004 - 2008

Recommendation

LONGLIFE III

Alternative

Platinum

Longlife is a 5w30 fully synthetic
Platinum is a 5w40 semi synthetic (suited for T&D) - I would say personally that 15w40 is too heavy for this engine

Its recommended to run longlife all the time regardless of your service plan (longlife or T&D) but in any case, 15W40 isnt a great choice.

i ran my car for 7 months on maganatec 10w40 didnt notice a difrence, but i spose that some engine compontnts might not last as long as longlife oil is fully syntetic whenre as magnatec is only semi syntetic

Thanks for the replies, I understand what some are saying that it doesn't make too much difference but I did pay VW to do a proper job. I'm gna ring customer service now and see what they say.

They're now saying it was an error on the invoice and the service personnel wrote down the wrong grade. Apparently it was 10w40 Castrol GTX Professional (never heard of it but it meets VW 501.01 which is the right one according to VW).

I thought longlife oil was meant to be used regardless of service regime?

Dealers will use different oil for T&D - its just us forum folk prefer using longlife 3 as it gives the best protection to the engine whatever your service setup

Hmm theres little way to prove that what they said is true, but even so 5w40 is VWs recommended oil for T&D and not 10w40 on these engines.

(what I copied was from the TPS oil finder who are a division of VAG).

Castrol GTX is 'lower' quality than magnatec - its more of a general oil as opposed of the magnatec which as a more specialist oil, offers better cold start protection etc. GTX also costs less than magnatec.

I believe there was a notice sent round to the VW service centres to use longlife in all servicing on TFSI some clued up people have made comment of it in the past.  Hope that it was an admin mistake and not the other way around!  very difficult to prove either way.

It's an FSI not a TFSI (not a GTI). No way to prove otherwise now, guess I'll just have to stick with it. Thanks for the quick responses.

On a side note, has anyone got ETKA? I need a price and part check for the Flexi pipe exhaust (it's blowing).

:signLOL:, be funnier to do it to the service manager. The techs seem OK.

Same place that Boothy had a problem (VW Wakefield), pattern forming? Hmmmmm
