Clunk when coming out of P
« on: January 17, 2011, 07:48:18 am »
This morning when I got in my car it seemed to be locked in P.
When it came out (with mild force) it made a loud clunking noise.
I never used the car over the weekend and was wondering does the P have a "brake' on it and has it locked on a bit.
Everything was fine coming to work. Kept putting it into P at lights and everything is working as it should.

Happens to manuals too. Brake pads stick to the discs I think. Worse when the brakes are wet and the car is stored overnight, or in very cold weather.

You should use your car more frequently!  :driver:

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

.
Almost certainly brake pads sticking to discs. If you immediately inspect the discs you'll see evidence. They'll soon shine up after some driving and testing the brakes - Good idea to always test your brakes at the start of any journey.

I had the worst case ever yesterday and had to really mount the revs to free it. For this reason I have been leaving the handbrake off in my garage and just using P, but it obviously doesn't solve the problem.

The other thing to watch is if you use the brakes hard and a lot such as on a track day, don't put your handbrake on until your discs have cooled down.

Question to all:

Does P action the pads onto the disc?

Does the brake pads sticking make it difficult to get the car out of P?

Ive had this when I have let the car roll forward or backwards after engaging P, when I get back in to drive off its harder to get it back into D.

....Not any more difficult to select R or D from P, but the pads can stick when the throttle is then used to move the car.

....Me too.

I'd still like to know/confirm if P actions the pads against the disc - I assume it must, particularly due to my pads sticking yesterday from P.

Not quite sure what moving the gear stick out of P has to do with brake pads but I am willing to be educated.

Mine can be a bit clunky sometimes coming out of P mainly if the car has moved slightly or settled a bit after coming to a standstill. On normal autos P locks the gearbox and if the car has moved then there will be some force on the gears. I would put it down as a characteristic more than anything sinister.

....Aha! Then perhaps I'm ok to continue using P and no handbrake in my batcave.
